CF-18 keyboard & memory upgrades.

#1 Post by Thor »

I am hoping someone here can answer my questions. I am interested in upgrading the keyboard on my cf-18 mkI (CF-18BDAZXMM) to a backlit model. Does this model have the wiring to support this upgrade? I also want to max out the ram. How much & what type do I need? Any input is greatly appreciated. Thanks

This is probably the best deal yet on a back lit keyboard:

http://cgi.ebay.com/Panasonic-Toughbook ... 500wt_1182

I bought one and so have several others on this forum. As far as the ram, it will be 1GB is max. There is 256 on the mobo and you can put in a 1GB stick, but it will only recognize 1GB.
One CF-52, four CF-18's, 4.5 CF-28's, one CF-29, five CF-M34's, two CF-37's, one CF-P2 and two CF-P1's. There are also two Getac A320T's, one Fieldpac and two IBM Transnotes. Not to mention the AMD 5600 CPU with three monitors and several HP PDA's. Whew! Must quit buying...no, must have MORE! Then there are the weapons...

Yes you are all set to go......just replace the regular keyboard with the backlit one , your done :D . I bought mine from the same seller as Silver Trooper did and it was just like new. I have the same CF-18 as you (MK1) and it takes 10-15 minites tops to put in the rubber backlit keyboard. Very easy upgrade .

Just wondering if the 18's rubber KB is as bad to type on as those 27/28's. Had one on the 27 but replaced it with a regular chicklet.

My first 29 came with a rubber keyboard and it took a while ......very long while to get the feel of it so I broke down and got the Emissive backlit keyboard. The only reason why I got the rubber backlit for my 18 is its the only way to have a backlit keyboard for it and I need a backlit in my truck or car at night.

Thanks. I appreciate the help. This is the first time I have opened up my CF-18 & I'm a little nervous. Will I need any other supplies for this switch out? Also on the memory - what type of 1gb stick do I need? - ( speed & DDR, DDR2, etc). Thanks

Nothing. The keyboard might be stuck down with double face tape but just take your time and it will come off. Remember to take the battery out before starting and your memory is under your speaker.

Keyboard switch was a piece of cake & it works beautifully. The RAM issue is still pending. Still waiting on my new chip, but I'm not anticipating any problems. Now I just need to find a set of restore disks & I will be set. Thanks again for all of the help & encouragement.
