5G WWAN for CF-31?

#1 Post by r.wyll »

Any chance there is a 5G WWAN card that will work in a mk5 CF-31?

Zero chance. New modern Toughbooks will have EM9190's with 5G MM wave though! :) Check FZ-G2AKFBHAM as an example:

Win10 Pro, Intel Core i5-10310U 1.7GHz (4.4Ghz), vPro, 10.1" WUXGA Gloved Multi Touch+Digitizer, 16GB, 512GB OPAL SSD (quick-release), Intel Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth, 5G EM9190 (Sub6+mm), Dual Pass (Ch1:WWAN/Ch2:WWAN-GPS), Infrared Webcam, 8MP Rear Camera, Standard Battery, Bridge Battery, TPM 2.0

Also sub 6GHz "5g" (4G LTE enhanced) with the EM7690 will be available as well but no SKU's out yet that I can legally share ;)

Here are a couple snips from the Sierra PDF I have:

Mini PCIE slots that the CF-31 uses cannot accommodate the transfer rates that 5G will need anyway (which to make things worse: the CF-31 WWAN modules used the USB lines). So manufacturers like Sierra have no reason to make any modules for that connector. For laptops that means they'll only make them for the newer M.2 type slots.

You may be able to get a 5G USB 3.0 dongle to plug into the CF-31, but you will still be limited by USB 3.0 speeds.
Daily drives a CF-31

No because the new units are going to be QUAD RF / PASS THRU, not dual!

Thanks!
