Re: CF-29 SATA CADDY
Sure it works! But my only conern on this is that you will loose the foam absortion on both end of the caddy.

Pretty interesting, but if I had done this mod I would have went for a half TB or so. Also good to know as PATA dries up!

Re: CF-29 SATA CADDY
I posted this Mod on NBR. I'll Copy the mod here.
This all started back when I first found the NBR thread and read through all the posts. I saw MrBungles posts about attempting this, #215, #217, #228, and then no more. I got CURIOUS.
The original link was posted by MrBungle back in post #215

The frontal pictures in the link shows the black jumper in place. Remove it.
I ordered mine right from "Cooldrives." It was $28.19, shipped to NY. When it arrived I grabbed one of my spare sata 2.5 drives and sat down to figure out what MrBungle described in post #228, was right or wrong.
First thing, I found that the little black jumper on the face of the adapter had to be removed for proper operation. Only took 3 attempts to figure that out!! Open basket, remove carefully, unwrap, change to another drive, rewrap, restuff, etc. as no directions or spec's came in the package.
After attaching the adapter and ribbon cable then changing the shielding and putting the sata in the plastic envelope that is when the minor reengineering took over. I had to remove the small 90 deg. brace in the front of the upper cover and the two black foam blocks on the fold over cover on the envelope.
(The information on removing the brace and two foam blocks came from one of the sellers on EBAY, even though they were charging double ($45.00) for the adapter. Now I've seen it at $55.00.) Can You say OOOuch!
EDIT: Forget removing the brace, after closer inspection it has been found that there is no binding that may involve the ribbon cable. Leave it there. The only things removed then are the two foam blocks.
I took them off carefully with a razor blade and saved for possible reinstall if it didn't work.
Carefully routing the ribbon cable, I reattached it to the mount tab on the upper cover and then "stuffed" everything back in the lower half and carefully "squeeeezed" everything back together and put the screws back in. It is a TIGHTER Fit. Being CAREFUL is the main point.
As soon as I put it back in the computer and powered up and went into Bios.
Bingo!!!! There was the 160 gig hd. Ran the Dos disc for partition and format, Hello, 160 gig ready to load for XP. Yippeee!!! It's working, it's working."
I will take pictures and submit later. It is an easy job, and won't take that much longer then changing out a regular ide drive.
At this time I had a spare 160 SATA sitting around. If Azrial has jumped his Mk4 to 320 gig, what is the possibilties for the Mk1, Mk2 and Mk3's, as I've tested the MK3 at 160 gig.

Re: CF-29 SATA CADDY
Liam, I eagerly await for the pics from your mod and in the mean time, I'm toying with converting a media bay floppy to a spare HDD but it seems those adapters I ordered might be a tad too big. Oh well...liamw652 wrote:http://www.cooldrives.com/2sahadrtoide.html

Re: CF-29 SATA CADDY
Ohhh, I like that idea also.
These adapters are the same size as the 2.5 drives. They are small enough that I was able to squeeze everything back into the drive caddy while only removing two non-critical foam blocks and the brace on the cover. Now I just need access to larger drives so I can continue bench-marking drive capacities.
Time to post the pictures that I took of this mod.

Re: CF-29 SATA CADDY
Here are the pictures of the SATAIDEPOS
installation that I posted on NBR and above.
EDIT: Forget about removing the aluminum brace, it does not restrict anything and can be left in the top cover. The question was, Did the brace interfer with the ribbon cable. NO.
EDIT: Forget removing the brace. After further inspection it does not restrict or bind anything and I have reinstalled the brace.

Re: CF-29 SATA CADDY
Liam,
Well... I can't possibly think of anything better to do with all the extra FDD caddies, so might as well hack one up and experiment. Cooldrives is having a $19.98 sale on the said adapter and if anyone is gonna make an order for these, can I tag along for 2 pieces and re-ship to SG? (in a padded envelop will do just fine)
Realized too late that what I ordered were laptop optical drives to IDE adapters.... drats! What the hell was I thinking!!?? Yeah, I know I'm a pain but... let me know anyway
Ron in SG
