Vehicle mounting CF-18

#1 Post by rodgrech »

Howdy gents,

just wondering what options there are for mounting the toughbook in a vehicle are about. when i was working for nsw police panasonic had built them a custom dock/mount to be able to mount the toughbook in tablet mode on a stalk bolted over the transmission hump

So any suggestions for a home brew or storebought

also right hand drive toyota 4 runner / surf (88 model)

There are CF-18 docking stations on Ebay, but either new or used they are horribly expensive. Your best bet is to get a Ram mount specific to your vehicle and then use the generic mount that comes with the stand. While you do not get the functionality of the Panny docking station (USB ports and others), the cost is considerably less. That is what I am doing with my CF-29. I found a Trailblazer mount on Ebay for about 40% off retail and just used the plastic universal mounting dock that came with the mount.
One CF-52, four CF-18's, 4.5 CF-28's, one CF-29, five CF-M34's, two CF-37's, one CF-P2 and two CF-P1's. There are also two Getac A320T's, one Fieldpac and two IBM Transnotes. Not to mention the AMD 5600 CPU with three monitors and several HP PDA's. Whew! Must quit buying...no, must have MORE! Then there are the weapons...

The docking stations are quite expensive for these
They are not as common as the cf27-cf30 mounts which have been sold in large numbers
I have bought 3 Gamber-Johnson mounts for these
The first mount a few years ago I purchased new at $700 ,and the last two mounts were used at less than $300 each

What docks would you guys recomend that would have a plug for an external GPS antena?

Or do I just use a basic dock and then plug in the antena? How would I go about that? What antena would I use?

THANKS!
Ryan

I recomend the cheap way
Use a usb gps as it's $50 or so and uses up 1 usb port on the docking station
The docks that have an antenna breakout for a builtin gps are much rarer

Whats your budget for this project ?

Ya thats sweet, but the mount is no wories. I will be mounting it off the bar that goes across the bottom of the windsheild in my roll cage.

I was more interested in the actual dock for the computer. Though i was looking for one that has integrated ports, i think i will just fab one up. the locking part is my only unknown.
