It appeared to, I can actually move it lol. Now if I can only get the freaking wifi and sound to work... lol
It actually even restarted with out hanging up and not sure HOW that was fixed..

I was on my other computer looking at MX-15. Since the installs seemed to have less issues, I was debating on weather to install it or not. I have nothing on this other than the OS so I do not have to worry about deleting anything important. I was confused on the PAE and Non-PAE however. I am guessing non PAE? since the tbs cannot run 64gbs ram (lol would be nice).

It would be nice but with maximum 1.5 to 2 Gbs ram there is no point.

One thing I noticed is that your first post where it says 686 kernel??? MX14.4 and 15 use 586 kernels for the Antix old timers. MK 3 and before use 386. One Youtube guy pronounced Antix "anteeks" ...very fitting. I have found that a PAE OS loaded in a MK4/5 runs fine on a MK1 CF-29. My one SSD caddy will play in any CF-29.

The point is the system checks for PAE on install not on normal usage.

My recommendation is MX15 non-pae and get your speed up with a techtuff adapter and SSD. 14 second boot. :D FYI your MK5 will play with PAE. NOT 64 bit. 32 bit is faster and a better match for available ram and the machine as a whole. Trying not to confuse you more than you already are. :)

Welcome to the Linux section and TBT by the way.
Fair for you/ Fair for me.

Another double post but it's my forum (I started it) so......

Some Linux distros install with sound muted. I don't know what brain surgeon thought that up.

Bottom line is I see a lot of Mint 17.3 issues on the Google. Especially the latest kernel. And I started with Mint 8......got coerced into Ubuntu then went crazy with Debian knock-offs.

Maybe kodeniner could help....though he is a pure Debian fanatic. (Teasing here, Linux is his business and he has my total respect)

All right I'll try this....The Linux distro folks are like the world in general...they want to protect us from ourselves. Or maybe it's they want to put a system online that has no problems...and no negative feedback. So the locks are tightened and information is hard to get.

This is my opinion and comments are welcome from anyone. Just be nice. :)

You have a second machine it appears, download MX-15 and try it on a USB stick. If you no likey try something else. Free is as cheap as it gets.

Ok after having to get MX-14 since the .iso for 15 will NOT read.. smh.. I tried booting form usb lol no such luck there, all it say is the os is not availble.. however figured out how to make it boot from usb in the bios :boing:. The wifi sound and the restart hanging up still seems to be happening still.. blah...

The sound may have been muted in Microsoft. For whatever reason it needs to be un-muted in M$. This works both ways. Muted in Linux stays muted in M$.

This is a place where power pull reset might work. Pull all power and hold the key down until your finger gets tired. Clears the stupid from the mobo. On restart [F2] to bios [F9][F10]yes to save. (Shorthand for setting bios to defaults)

With two little screwdrivers you can un-plug the cmos battery. One through hdd door and one through pc door. Again hold switch down to clear residuals. As long as you don't move the plug too far it will WANT to be plugged back in due to the set the wires have taken. FYI

Use left hand screwdriver to steady the plug, use right hand one in a rotating motion in the slot that the connectors form. If all else fails pull the bottom off re-plug and squish the thermal pads while you are in there.

Ummm you do have a speaker in there, yes? Any sound in headset jack.

Is pulse audio installed?

Use MX-14 package installer. O.K. it's not installed. Just checked my 53A.

For menu ala Windows Key (surrender flag) here are the steps.

From desktop right click applications- settings- keyboard
application- Shortcuts
+Add
open wait a minute and scroll to xfce4-popup-whiskermenu {Open}
OK
tap windows key (should say Super L)
Fair for you/ Fair for me.

WIFI

Send output of:

Code: Select all

dmesg | grep wifi
Sound

Send output of:

Code: Select all

dmesg | grep sound
To be honest I don't understand output from iwlist eth1 scan. Are you using a cell phone as a wireless router? Not that it is wrong I have just not seen that output before.

Thanks,

Jeff...ignorance is bliss cattle company...

EDIT WON'T WORK....SEE END OF NEXT POST. END EDIT

I must be running on 512 Mb ram. :) This is from USB drive with xset m 8 1 and my menu tweak. Sound is fine with no changes. Listening to Willie and typing I need to add a stick of ram. CF-29MK5 1800 hours. OSDisk.com boughten from antiX. MX14.4 32 bit. (Stick is 32Gb of polished aluminum.)

Re: CF-29NTQGZBM Linux Mint Mate 17.3 Issues

#19 Post by UNCNDL1 »

I've seen the "no sound" before when installing Linux on several models of Toughbooks. The only way to get sound working after pulling out my hair was to start fresh, and install Panasonic fresh install of Windows using recovery disks. Then, unmute the sound and make sure it is working. Then, and only then, install a working Linux distro (such as MX 14, etc.).
I would NOT dual boot a CF-29, unless you are so inclined. Kudos on the suggestion above to get a TechTuff adaptor and add SSD. Yes, I have a CF-29 LTQGZBM sitting here

I'm back with a stick of ram and MX-14 on ssd. What a difference.

Is your speaker plugged in? I saw that once.

Code: Select all

$ dmesg | grep pcspkr
[ 3.003194] input: PC Speaker as /devices/platform/pcspkr/input/input7
Thanks Cleve (UNCNDL1)
