what's your take on survival / further development of cf19 product line?
the numbering scheme implies death of cf19, even tough it's an entirely different plattform for different use cases.

Also, I'm wondering if Panasonic is slowly moving away from fully-rugged.
cf31 has a fan. cf20 has widescreen ips display + less drop resistance

I don't agree with you on this. They are NOT going to move away from fully rugged. They are bringing it down a few notches because they need things to improve on later to be able to provide "new features" in the future. They have to always give you a little more, little more and little more as the generations progress. Keep in mind too that this is "newer tech" so I think Panasonic would rather under-promise and over-deliver.

Thanks!

I doubt that fully rugged is going away anytime soon...Too many gov't contracts.
I see this a just another product line to compete with Microsoft surface and similar...
I like the idea of a "semi" rugged convertible.

As for a CF31 with a fan..I have had several CF31's completely apart (motherboard swaps). They are everybit as fully rugged as any CF19 or CF30. I have zero fears with the fan.

Side note..Maybe I can do this as I have most of a CF31 in parts. I have 2 repaired motherboards so I could sacrifice one..Need a LCD, but I could use an external monitor. Disconnect the fan on a CF31 and run it hard and long and see what happens..

Thanks for your veteran opinions on these questions.

It is reassuring to hear that the fully rugged thing stays in focus.
Rob thinks cf20 will replace cf19 and grow up to be more rugged,
while Shawn thinks of cf20 as a parallel product line.
Folks at NBR speculate it could also replace the cf-h2.

I've sent an email to panasonic us sales support this morning and asked them to clarify.
I'll post an update if/when they respond.

It took two years. Serious engineering and testing? I knew I had seen it before. And yes I know FZ-G1 and CF-20 are smallish worlds apart. (different)

I'm learning. (from you and your constructive criticism of jeffspeak). The word I had is the iKey KB is pretty good.

Yes folks I understand these are not the same. (they just look somewhat the same) The reason for the post is the following....'cause I'm curious.

SO TROOPS, WHAT PURPOSE WILL THIS (CF-20) SERVE?

TELL US HOW YOU ARE GOING TO USE IT. PLEASE. HOW WILL IT MAKE YOUR LIFE EASIER?

TOUGHBOOKS ARE TOOLS....LET'S TALK ABOUT IT.

Jayburd....need a jayburd smilie.... :)

That keyboard thingy has been out for years now.... It's obnoxious, doesn't type well and is way too over priced...

The H2 has been EOL'd a while ago but due to demand they are still available but only on LARGE deals on a case by case basis.

Drop rating for tablet only: 180cm
Drop rating for tablet + keyboard dock: 120cm

according to Paul Davidson, Panasonic Toughbook's Corporate Sales Manager (3:10-3:30 into the video)

uh and I just noticed that they have fixed the L shape arrow key layout to be a T shape. yay!
