another question
i have the option of a :
Seagate Momentus 750GB drive
or a 128GB ssd

will opt for the 750GB unless you think the performance boost of the ssd will outweigh the lower storage capacity ?

and comments thanks
In my opinion, it would depend on what you use your toughbook for. In my case, I use it for work and don't need space for games, music, videos or other useless junk. I keep that stuff on my desktop systems at home. Also since my toughbooks have 3G internet at all times , anything else I need can be pulled from my servers which I keep connected to as virtual sshfs drives.

The second point is having a high performance 7200RPM drive in a unit that I know will get banged around out on the field does not inspire much confidence in me, despite the foam bumpers. With a SSD, I am more likely to break the toughbook itself before I lose files if it gets in an accident.

The last point is the performance is rather good. Even with a slower Kingston v300 I can boot Linux in under 10 seconds on a mark 2. But I hear that the Momentus is no slouch either. This really depends on your own tolerance for waiting around for things to boot, moving files or scrounging around a large un-cached database.

I vote for the SSD....I did it to all of my units with no regrets....
The performance jump is amazing..Plus the durability and increased battery runtime.
If space is an issue, grab a large capacity usb flash stick and keep it in your pocket.
Or get a large SD card and keep it in the slot...I do that also.
