I woke up and remember having your exact same problem a long time ago. My account
was bonked but the guest account worked. If your not afraid of the command line we can fix this.

What I did was:
1. Log into guess account, open terminal, su to root.
2. type "adduser", this creates a new account, I named it backup
3. root can do anything (almost) so I moved all my data and pictures, but not my settings files
to backup. settings file are most likely where the problem is.
4. run "userdel" and remove your old account.
5. I restarted the computer, just incase, then got back to guest/terminal/su
6. run "adduser" again, made an account with the name I wanted and reloaded my files.
. note you may have to change file ownership to the new account pm if you need help.
7. I removed backup account and got an external drive and now I back up to several locations.

I hope this helps. I am going to write a tutorial on command line shortly and post it to the forum.

Thanks for the help and advice!

I may be wrong here, and most likely am, but are not several stages of this plan now unneeded since I can now get into Termial on primary account?

To get to Terminal I just created a folder and used the search bar to find it. This is the same way that I have managed to send this, by searching for a .URL and clicking on it to bring up the brouser.

The general idea here seems that there is no way to fix my exsisting GUI, but to just deleat and create a new account. I may have to bite the bullet and do that, but I would like to think that there is a better way.

I am running Ubuntu 14.04 LTS.

My data is secure and backed up, so we can quit worrying about that.

I have deleated Compiz with OpenGL and reinstalled, but no joy! :(

Thanks again! :D

 OK, that was for my friend Jeff, who has pointed out that this has been my idea of feedback with past issues. Let me try and do better!

First, I got to a terminal as I have said, by createing a folder and searching for "Terminal" and clicking on that. That worked, the keyboard shortcuts did not.

Second, I found this post on reinstalling the Unity desktop, http://askubuntu.com/questions/462914/h ... untu-14-04.

Type the following in a Terminal:

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get update

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop
Third, I found this article: Here's how you can reset the Unity desktop in Ubuntu 14.04.
1. Open a terminal window.

2. Type in the following commands then hit Enter after each.

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install dconf-tools

Code: Select all

dconf reset -f /org/compiz/

Code: Select all

setsid unity

Code: Select all

unity --reset-icons
Wingo Zingo, Unity started working! Let's see how it runs now! I am running it now! :D

Cool, I am glad you got it fixed.

I tend to break things in a big way, so I have gotten in the habit of backing my data up.
Its also how I learned to fix Linux.

Speaking of Learning Linux, a friend just showed me this:

*****edit removed link / reviews indicate it is a unfavorable product, so I cant recommend it.***

Anyway Im glad you and your computer are back in "Unity" Sorry, I couldn't help myself.... :)

Thanks for any and all help!

But really, this is has gotten me thinking. I need to make this thing more bullet proof then this! My data is secure and has been. I even had a second OS (Win7 Ultimate x64) to fall back on, but I need to make the Linux side of the PC more redundant.

Wow, without words...just now up and running and reading this. Thanks to Glitch, Kodeniner, Azrial, and lefty for chimeing in....I know nothing about fixing things, except to just re-install a new distribution. Glad it all worked out for you Bill, thanks for giving details and code...I'm on a live distribution, working on a project Jeff and I are working on. Check this out:
