What do you guys use your Toughbooks for?

#1 Post by WittgensteinSergeant »

I use my 19 for pretty much anything, from light gaming, setting up networks, or even looking up repair info or error codes while repairing washing machines. (my Miele gave a blinking Wassen/Washing light, that means heater, heater relay or circuit board malfunction.)

Talking about washers: Had my 19 today for a job involving a BH bracket jammed between the tub and drum of a AEG washer, had to partially dissasemble it, but if I didn't have my 19 with instructions at hand I wouldn't get it done at all!

Well I use one 19 on my 4X4 ATV for GPS. I use my 19MK5 in the truck when travelling for GPS. My CF-52MK4 I use at the camp for watching movies and my CF-53 is my main Toughbook that I use every day .

This should be a long list.

One CF-U1 Mk1 for GPS mapping that gets swapped from car to car.
One CF-19 Mk2 with GPS for ATV riding, not really for mapping. It's used more as a speedometer/logger.
One CF-19 Mk3 I use for travel to work when I don't take my Alienware M11x.
One CF-74 Mk4 that are used for general purpose stuff.
One CF-30 Mk2 I have set up with software for car tuning. That way I can see the portable dyno and air/fuel ratio on the screen.
One CF-H1 Mk2 with GPS I use for Mapping around the house with property lines, etc.
CF-28 MK2,Mk3 / CF-29 Mk3 / CF-30 MK2 / CF-25 Mk1 ATI / CF-19 MK3/Mk3/Mk5 / CF-U1 Mk1,Mk2 / CF-M34 Mk7/Mk3 / CF-17 Mk1 / CF-07
Voodoo Envy M355 / M360 / M515 / M780 / U703 / Voodoo Hexx / Voodoo Idol / Voodoo Rage F1 / Voodoo Rage F1 / Voodoo Rage F1 "signed case" / Voodoo Omen
Alienware M11x R1, Alienware 17 R5

I use the CF-29 as a boat anchor.
The CF-30 as a level 3A body armor chest insert for a tactical assault vest.
The CF-19 to keep track of cookie and muffin recipes.
Daily drives a CF-31

CF-53 quick on and off email and forums.....Google etc.
CF-30, 29 and JT-B1 for fire department gps stuff. The B1 is still a maybe....Android and Linux are not the best for the types of maps that I prefer. My Chief's rig will get the JT-B1 w/dock if I get it sorted. Truck is in the shop for bed repair and custom head-ache rack....maybe another dog box then JT-B1 might get a home. A full size TB and dock takes up room where I could seat a fire fighter.
I jerked the tape deck out and have a perfect home for the Motorola 1550. Oh, that reminds me the CF-27 is used with pure dos for the older radio programming. Some say it's too fast but it has worked so far.....annnnnd newer radios will program fine with W7. I like a CF-19 for programming in the cab of fire trucks. Smaller footprint.
The other 25 or so I look at and wish I had a salesman. I prefer fixing to selling.

I wish I had one "back-in-the-day" when I was a pro fire fighter for incident mapping. CALFIRE aircraft have Toughbooks I'm told....I'd like that project. Once! Then it's boring.

I have terrible hand-writing. I want a full size keyboard as does my wife. (CF-30MK3) I don't own a desktop anymore. Prefer CF-52 GUNBRAM or similar. Red back-light rules over back-lit. And very, very tough for a semi-rugged. My daily user has 26,000 hours on it.

That's what I use 'em for.

All units available in boxes of five. CF-29 MK1 through CF-30 MK3. :D
Fair for you/ Fair for me.
I chose to NOT be organized.

My Toughpad FZ-G1 for just about anything -- email, web, programming industrial automation devices, running the occasional VM. As a tablet I generally like it better than Android for more involved web surfing as Windows browsers are just better than those on Android right now.

My CF-30 Mk1 isn't being used at the moment, but I have plans for some alternative OS experimentation on it (besides Linux).

If I got another one, it'd probably be a CF-52. I like the 1920x1200 aspect ratio. Too bad Panny doesn't offer them with quad-core i7s.

I used an old beat to death CF-52G for a long time, still my favorite laptop. I have a couple i3 and i5 52's,I might just keep one ,the i3 with 240 ssd and 4gb ram boots in 15 seconds.

Beats my NCS i7 by a good 20 seconds.:-)
2 CF-30Mk3's, 2 CF-71's, CF-L1, 3 CF-72's, CF-73, CF-74, CF-48, CF-50, CF-51Mk3, 2 CF-19's,7 CF-52's, FZ-A1 and other assorted beaters.

Seriously, though. I used the CF-29 and now the CF-30 for controlling small UAVs. The 30 is better suited for streaming real-time data (Thanks Jeff!). But I've used the 29 for just about anything work-related for a couple of years before fooling around with drones, and it has the scars to prove it.

Now I use the CF-19 for everything related to managing networks and servers and several types of communications every day. It basically never leaves my side. I'll be sitting at a pub toiling away at auth logs and net stats while sipping an ale or a dram of whisky, or haul it up the mountain on my buddy's land. Speaking of load-bearing vests, the 19 does fit in the chest plate pocket and the 30 in back, with batteries in the mag pouches, like a solider in the geek army. I wouldn't be surprised if they could absorb a 9mm too.
 :blowaway:

I have seriously considered getting a small drone like the parrot drone and using one of my 30/19's with it. What type are you using? Helicopter type or aircraft type? What software are you using? We had a electrician on the rig that was very deep into the DIYDRONES site and had a plane he could fly from the rig in Saudi while it was in Arkansas. So I have checked back and read up on the latest there every now and then.

I use all my toughbooks for playing games, surfing the net, and reading newspapers or digital books.
