So I picked up a mint condition CF-08........clueless is the word. A little help figuring out how to remotely connect to another laptop would be great.

Network stuff is not my thing. :D

I have messed with mine for a bit and they are a bit of a learning curve. I have got the ad-hoc network to work yet but had pretty good luck with remote desktop over the same wireless access point. The key I found was to use a G-only network. If you have a newer N router and leave it in mixed mode, the CF-08 will disconnect constantly. Other than that, I have only played with a few things, like reading a PDF on it.

The first thing I'd recommend would be to update the bios. The last time I went looking for a bios update I found one on the .ca panny website. Updating the bios till take a CF-08TX1BX1M from WinCE 4 to WinCE 5 which makes the wireless work better, at least in my experience. I do agree that wireless G only is a good thing as was stated by Wyrm73. After that it depends on what you want to do with the CF-08. I personally use a CF-08 on an adhoc network to remote desktop to a CF-51 that I have Calibre e-book software and an e-book library on. One thing you have to do is set a password on the account used to access the remote desktop. I found there was very little documentation on that particular detail about setting up a remote desktop. Otherwise there are numerous tutorials on how to set up a remote desktop so I won't get into that here. Since you say you aren't a network guy that's probably all you want to try and do with you CF-08. They can connect to Citrix or Windows servers and use server applications, but that's a whole other ball of wax. You can also connect them to access points and then LAN enabled desktops but it's much more complicated than the adhoc network. I have tried this and it is much more hassle than it's worth in my opinion.

Another thing I do is save my settings in the CF-08 after I've gotten it all set up. If you don't do this you'll lose all your settings once power goes off. I also set my screen brightness level very low to preserve the battery. Something else to note is that you cannot use a memory card that is not a plain SDSC memory card. This limits the memory card size to 4GB or less :( As far as I can determine, you'd have to have WinCe 5.0 developers tools and the specific source code for the customized version of WinCE 5.0 that the CF-08 runs to allow the CF-08 to use SDHC or SDHX memory cards. The developer tools could be gotten, although the license is not cheap, but panny would never release the customized version. Panasonic wants to sell newer products, not support end of life products.

I'd be happy to answer any other specific questions if I can :)

Oh Rob.....
Move this to the new and elegant 08 section please. :)
Then it will be easier to get our twocents worth. :D

Twocents,
Can you start a tutorial on using this piece of gear?
I'll admit I have NO experience with remote desktops. I've been at it for a week this time and get no connection errors. Then there is the matter that my CF-08' s have folders but no files. ICA is there but no bluetooth files (folder yes).
These are lovely units but Windows CE is frustrating the ----- out of me.
Links to anything would be helpful.

I realize this is a lot to ask but I can make it worth your while. I pay with Toughbucks. :D

ROM V1.60L10
EC V1.60L10
CF-08TX2CX1M
MS Windows CE 5.0

Jeff,

What specifically do you want to know how to do? At a guess the no connection errors are you not specifying the correct network in the control panel. At the moment I don't have the CF-08 I use handy, so I can't look up anything specific. I'll try and get back to this thread tomorrow evening central time. I've been busy and hadn't checked up here until now :/
