Ubuntu vs. Mint
Ubuntu vs. Mint
I am trying to get a Getac ML220 to be something useful again. The XP on it now is problematic so I am of course thinking of adding some distro of Linux to it.
I have always used Ubuntu and been pretty happy with it, with the exception of its issues with GPS...
I know a lot of you guys like Mint, I am not sure if it is the fresh aftertaste that reminds you of a brisk dip in a mountain stream or because you are contrarians, but it certainly commands its following here.
So the real question, do you honestly think that Mint is quicker and lighter then Ubuntu?

Re: Ubuntu vs. Mint
Azrial,
I'm not sure of the specs on your Getac. You might have to try a few and see. That being said,
I would try the Ubuntu of your choice, comparing it to these to see which one is quicker and lighter with your hardware.
Lubuntu: https://www.wikivs.com/wiki/Lubuntu_vs_Xubuntu
Mint13XFCE: http://www.linuxmint.com/edition.php?id=113

Re: Ubuntu vs. Mint
I ran Mint at first...Mint 8? then with so many questions being asked I tried Ubuntu through several numbers. When Ubuntu turned into looking like a cell phone I went back to Mint.....amongst others, finally settling on Mint 16 Cinnamon as my all time favorite. On a MK2 CF-30 I would say Mint 17, Cinnamon is a little hungrier than XFCE and Mate....but I like what I'm used to.
Watched a video the other day and the steady riser is ElementaryOS. (worldwide) Just a steady climb on the graph presented. I like EOS, clean desktop, comes preloaded with Chromium........it's o.k.
Uncndl1 has tried everything. His Mint 13 is a good one. EOL is 2017.
LMDE is alright too. (LinuxMint Debian)
Sent from CF-53 Mint 16 on a Intel SSD. (dual boot with W7 in case I ever need it)

Re: Ubuntu vs. Mint
Thanks for the feedback!!!
I am kind of vacillating between Lubuntu and Mint13XFCE.
The Getac M220 is a 1.6 Centrino with 512MB DDR-333 (PC2700) Memory. I am considering buying 1GB for it, but I thing that will only get me to 1GB, not 1.5 GB.

Re: Ubuntu vs. Mint
Lubuntu is good.
I ummmmm upgraded the 53 and managed to blow a triple boot. So...now finishing up wiping the drive and now I am installing Mint 17 XFCE. This ssd equipped puppy will be very fast.
I hope the trim function works, this hdd is very confused right now. Look it up before cut and paste.

I'm laughing right now, and betting that Elementary OS has a short cut key with the windows/super key (between Fn and Alt), allowing the Menu to come up...seriously, Bill you have Navigatrix which is Ubuntu 14.04 Lite as is Lubuntu. Give it a try and customize it, eliminating the programs on the bottom Window you don't want to use. Then try the ones you are considering also. BTW, I am partial to Zorin because you can make the desktop like XP and Win7 if you want. I'm quad booting Zorin 9, Zorin 6 (Lubuntu 12.02 LTS), Mint13XFCE, and Navigatrix 0.5 June 2014. Nav works like a charm, and is easy to customize, as are all the others. Keep us informed and definately upgrade to max ram. You'll appreciate it alot. Best regards, Cleve

Re: Ubuntu vs. Mint
Yeah, I am also considering the Navigatrix 0.5. It seems to be pretty light on its feet and I definitely appreciate it! This thing is basically a CF-29 Mk5, with up to a max of 2GB of RAM.UNCNDL1 wrote:Navigatrix 0.5 June 2014. Nav works like a charm, and is easy to customize, as are all the others. On the subject of RAM, I think that you are forgetting you are talking to the guy that has Maxed the RAM in everything he has ever owned.
LoL, I am just not sure that this old computer is worth the expense! Its BIOS will not boot from a USB drive and only has a CD ROM, sooooo I will have to decide if I want to stick DVD in there.
Thanks for the input and ideas guys!
