Windows 11 on CF-31 MK4

#1 Post by theoak2 »

I have finished installing Windows 11 Pro on my MK4 and many of the drivers were included in the "Optional" updates. From the Windows Store app, I installed:

1.) Panasonic PC GPS Viewer
2.) Panasonic PC Camera Utility
3.) Panasonic PC Settings Utility

From Panasonic (Japan) Support Downloads, I downloaded and installed:

1.) Sierra MC7355 WWAN drivers
2.) 73xx_GPS_Rollover_2019_Tool
3.) Wireless Switch Utility
4.) GPS Registry Patch
5.) GPS Viewer dac
6.) PC Info viewer
7.) System interface Driver
8.) System Interface Manager
9.) Panasonic Common Components (64bit)
10.) Panasonic Common Components (32bit)

Everything works except I get a device with Hardware ID info: ACPI\VEN_MAT&DEV_0028 in Device Manager with no drivers loaded. That ID is supposed to be Wireless Switch. At least that is what it is in Windows 10. Any ideas as to what to install to get that device's drivers loaded? Everything seems to work without that driver, but it bugs me to see a device without it's drivers loading.

When I did a search for the term "ACPI\VEN_MAT&DEV_0028" I got this link at the top of the page and then a bunch of links to 'driver finders'. Maybe this will shed some light on the issue.

Thank you mklym, but I already found that Panasonic page, and no link to a driver, just a workaround for making Airplane mode work with wireless switch (which it already does).

I even tried (shudder) DriverMax, which found twenty-some (questionable) drivers for everything that was already working. But no Windows 11 compatible driver for Wireless Switch. The physical wireless switch on the side of the laptop does work, and in recommended compatibility mode for Windows 8, the Wireless Switch software does install. It even allows me to turn wireless LAN and wireless WAN off and on. Just that ACPI\VEN_MAT&DEV_0028 shows up in device manager under "Other devices" > "Unknown device", with the dreaded exclamation point icon. As far as I can tell everything works perfectly in spite of that icon.

Maybe I should not even let it bug me, but it does! I guess I have to stop looking at it.

I know on a few windows 7 drivers before I had to use 7zip to unpack it, then manually upload it though device manager before it would take.

Slightly off- topic:

I just bought a really nice CF-31 MK5 (CF-3111993CM) and put Windows 11 on it. Using the one-click bundle of drivers, all drivers were installed. I may re-try Windows 11 on MK4. (I think I previously downloaded drivers and installed individually, like we used to do??) Maybe you ToughBook old-timers already knew to use the one-click bundles.

Also, of interest, the spec sheet (from Panasonic) for this CF-31 does not indicate that it has PCMCIA or ExpressCard, but it does!!

My old MK4 is going to my 13 year old computer-destroyer-grandson who has really ragged out (keyboard problems, cracked screen, etc) a Lenovo laptop ($700.00) in about 1 year. It should be illegal to give a kid that age anything but a ToughBook!!

I bought a like new Mk 4 CF-31 (only had 10 hours on it) and would love to put windows 11 on it also. Don't even know where to begin really. It came with 16 gigs of RAM and a 1 TB ssd drive. GPS, DVD, Backlit keyboard... Really it has everything but a camera.

It runs really well and I love this thing but for longevity would love to get Windows 11 on it if possible.

If you version of 10 is running how you want it. You may want to swap to another drive to test it out before you install over your current install.

I agree with ADOR. I'd get a new SSD and ghost the Win 10 image on in then update to Win 11. Doing this will help keep alot of your Win 10 personalisations.
