Upgrades on CF-31ATAAX2M

#1 Post by phirephoto »

Hi All,

New owner of CF-31ATAAX2M.. So far I really like it!

Looking at .. ahem.. pimping it out. :) So few questions:

Is there a DVD Hard drive caddy? ie put a second hard drive in a caddy into the DVD slot? I've seen DVD hard drive caddies but I'd need to know the size I guess it is?
https://amzn.to/2mjHSCY
Would something like that work?

Also, will the CF-31A take beyond 8GB of memory?

Thanks!

From all I have read you will need a CF-31 multi-drive. (CF-VDM311U)

Note the part in the instructions where you need to use the "CDROM" faceplate. With CF-31 this includes the latch.

Several people have used 16 GB ram....notably Azrial from this forum and Notebookreview. His signature mentions a CF-31 MK2 w/ 16gb ram.
Fair for you/ Fair for me.
I chose to NOT be organized.

So sorry for the confusion.. Not looking for a multi drive. Looking for one of those 'hard drive cd bay' adapters - to use a hard drive in the CD bay.

Hmmm... So I believe my CF-31 is a MK1, no? Will it accept 16 GB also?

Yes we do understand what you are looking but you can't just use that. You need the part from the multi drive to put on the HDD Caddy to make it work. Go to Google search and put in " cf-31 multi-drive " .The part you need goes on both sides and the back.

Now this is just an example but if you check this link it will show you a cd-drive with out the frame you need https://m.ebay.com/itm/UJ8C5-Slim-Slot- ... =R40&rt=nc . Now check out this link. Picture #2 shows the part you need https://m.ebay.com/itm/Panasonic-Toughb ... =R40&rt=nc

Oh, gotcha - it's not a standard SATA connector :( Sounds like it might be more of a headache, unless someone makes a 'ready to go' version.

Ok, so for memory, I'm confused. I think one of the comments said the MK1 can't handle beyond 4 GB, but I currently have 8 ?

As for the drive, is there a part number or 'type'? I'd prefer one that uses a regular HD... :)

if i recall, we discovered a mk 1 will handle 8gb.

2nd HDD adapter model.

specific model is not as important as making sure it is SATA to SATA
12mm, or some call it 12.7mm

You need to buy a cf 31 dvd and remove the dvd drive from the plastic caddy and connector. Those need to be reused on the 2nd HDD adapter.

Thanks for the help, I think getting a second caddy may be a bit more involved than it's worth. I added a 256 GB SD card, so that's a start..

I'm looking to add a cellular card - It appears I need a Gobi 500? Are they 'device' specific? Searching for toughbook gobi, they appear to be $200 or so. But looking on Amazon, here's one that says for Dell - but appears the same - is it? And will it work with Verizon? Or even better, Xfinity mobile? https://amzn.to/2AkkCOK
