Ubuntu 16.04.1 LTS Xenial Xerus & the CF31J (WARNING)
Ubuntu 16.04.1 LTS Xenial Xerus & the CF31J (WARNING)
This is a bit of a rant, but a short story, if you are considering "upgrading" from 14.04 LTS to 16.04, don't! There has been a problem in Ubuntu Linux since at least version 12 with Nvidia Video drivers. Well, the latest version carries on that "proud" tradition, even though it runs from the Live DVD, when you try and install it, all hell breaks loose!
The video drivers, if not uninstalled from your old copy of 14.04 first, will cause you to go into an endless "login loop"! You will be asked for your Account Name over and password, over and over, but it is never correct.
I can find no way so far to resolve this problem and am using the live disc to try and copy some of my needed files from the HDD, before deleting the whole damned Linux partition and starting fresh.
If Microsoft had been allowed to let the same "bug" occur, over and over, version after version, all hell would break lose. NVidia makes some of the most popular video cards and chip-sets on the planet! Linux will never be taken seriously along as this is their idea of Quality Control!
I am still researching a fix!

Interesting, and even worse is that Toughbooks DO NOT use NVidia graphics at all.
Life will beat you into submission.
Re: Ubuntu 16.04.1 LTS Xenial Xerus & the CF31J (WARNING)
Tell us what you really think.
I'm sitting here wondering whether to upgrade or not. Different OS. The others (Ubuntu based) throw a tpm error code....this one does not.
1. Usually I fix them until they break.
More later.

Graphics and window manager SNAFU. I'd login in single user mode which you can achieve through the grub menu, probably Advanced options - rescue mode. From there you can use the CLI to remove stuff, I guess.
Don't blame Linux for Nvidia issues. Nvidia is notoriously difficult to work with since their drivers are proprietary. The 'nouveau' drivers that comes with the distros is admittedly not the best to deal with. On my desktop PC, I download and install Nvidia drivers from their web site and steer away from nouveau.

True, snide, but true..., however, the problem is the same with the Intel HD Graphics 3000. It goes into the same endless loop and I have had this problem before with the video drives corrupting the log-in.Shawn wrote:Interesting, and even worse is that Toughbooks DO NOT use NVidia graphics at all.
Come to think of it, I had the same problem with Mint 16-17 on a NVidia machine, my "Media Center PC," so I guess that I am merging the two problems because last time the solution, was the same. This time the problem does not even let me log in.

I can get into GRUB, but I see no command for "Single User Mode", "Rescue Mode" or "Advanced Options."kode-niner wrote:You should be able to with my previous post. Let us know how it goes!Azrial wrote:This time the problem does not even let me log in.

My mistake. It's recovery mode. And you'll never see single user mode listed in any menu.
You should see things similar to these:
Or follow these instructions:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/RecoveryMode
Or this has some good info:
http://askubuntu.com/questions/132965/h ... -from-grub
If after booting into single or recovery and you end up with a read-only root partition, you might need to:

Re: Ubuntu 16.04.1 LTS Xenial Xerus & the CF31J (WARNING)
Thanks, I got into the Recovery Mode and then dropped down to root. I was able to rebuild dmlight and then my password and user name worked!
Then, I noticed that I now have no sound... Still, one step at a time, my data is safe! More details to follow, thanks for the assistance!
