Non toughbook purchase, dang it.

#1 Post by ADOR »

For a customer they want something different. Looking at E6400 (core 2 duo 2.2, 2.4, 2.5, 2.9) or E6410 (i5 2.4) anyone know of any major problems with these models?

I picked up 2 this summer for $60.00 and $66.00 . Just needed a HDD + a $3.00 caddy. I did resell them for just under $200.00 on Facebook. Not really sure how good they are but since I have sold them they never came back for repairs. I got them from one of the Buybest (12, 13, 14, 15, 17) ebay sellers.

That was some of the ones I was looking for, going for 80 plus now, some over 100, then need caddy, hard drive, battery and charger. Since it's the business class machines they
"should" be better than the standard consumer class product Dell normally sells.

We use the ATG version at work and they are not a bad unit overall with only a couple issues. Given the choice, I would take a E6410 as they fixed some minor design issues from the earlier model and have slightly better performance. Graphics are definitely targeted to business users. The screen hinges loosen up way too easily in my opinion, but we do mount them in a vehicle where vibration compounds the problem. We have had massive hard drive failures with the regular, spinning drives- get a SSD (could be vibration related too). The only major issue is the LCD panel. The ATG has a LCD that is unique to that model and has a brighter backlight and anti-glare coating. I'm not sure if the problems are model specific as well, but the screen sometimes goes into power saving mode and the backlight refuses to turn back on. It also has a problem where the adhesive "leaks" out from between the LCD layers and leaves bubbles in the screen.

I have heard a lot of the ATG and XFR series had a lot of problems when they got older with the screens leaking. You see a ton of them on ebay with bubbles in the liquid that is in the screen on them.

The XT2 that I fixed and sold I thought something was wrong with the screen lighting when I first got it. It would auto dim, and act crazy. In the bios it was called ambiant light sensor. It was some power saving BS. Once I disabled that it worked like it should.

Well I have one E6400 and one E6410 on the way. Have to see how they are when they get here. One had core 2 duo 2.9 the other a i5 2.4.

I have a "few" of the D630 XFR model and absolutely love them (love that tan color scheme too!)! I swapped out the processor for the T7700 with 4GB RAM and an SSD and they will scream! I also have two of the XT2 XFR that is similar to the 18/19 series with a dual core processor and 5GB RAM. I thought about the E6400 XFR, but did not see the need. Since I have W7 Ultimate in the D630, I am going to up the RAM to 8GB.
One CF-52, four CF-18's, 4.5 CF-28's, one CF-29, five CF-M34's, two CF-37's, one CF-P2 and two CF-P1's. There are also two Getac A320T's, one Fieldpac and two IBM Transnotes. Not to mention the AMD 5600 CPU with three monitors and several HP PDA's. Whew! Must quit buying...no, must have MORE! Then there are the weapons...
