Almost there, GPS is the only thing not playing.

#1 Post by Barney »

Got all of the hardware installed and working.

Thanks to all who have helped me with this, I've got the bug now, I love playing with the Toughbook :D

Loaded XP Pro SP3 (TinyXP) applied all of the drivers (and the GPS registry fix) downloaded from Panasonic (in the right order, thanks tomcat57)

Everything works as it should (so I'd be surprised if it's the cut down OS), the battery is showing (in windows) as having 4 hrs runtime on a full charge (chargecount 32 according to the battery calibration) :D

The only fly in the ointment is the GPS, when enabled it makes the cursor fly around the screen at random, clicking at random.

I've tried both 'Auto' and 'Enabled' in the Bios ( also tried all available IRQ under enabled ) with no effect.

I do have certain items disabled in the bios (serail port, wireless modem), I've tried various combinations with the GPS enabled but nothing works so far.

I've never seen the GPS working so I may have a faulty unit.

Any ideas? How can I test the GPS? (Do I need a Panasonic test floppy?)

That is exactly the problem the GPS registry patch will fix. You must run SKIPENUM and it must successfully be incorporated into the registry. Do not run Enableenum because that reverses Skipenum. First boot to BIOS and set GPS to Disable. Then boot to winXP and run Skipenum. Then reboot, enable GPS (Auto), and look for NEMA data at 4800 baud on Com port 3 (or maybe 2 or 5).

Re ran SKIPENUM (with GPS disabled in the Bios) and got a message that it was successfully incorporated into the registry, so I rebooted after setting the GPS to auto, cursor still haywire.

So I ran Regedit, and sure enough there was no entry that matched the contents of SKIPENUM, so I rebooted switched the GPS off, then created an entry in the registry manually.

Rebooted with GPS set to Auto and hey presto it works.

Thanks again
