Ram questions

#1 Post by Barney »

The ram I removed that was preventing my CF-18D (which I just bought and am yet to get running) from booting is confusing me a little, so I need some definitive guidance.

KVR266X64SC25/512 is the part number on the ram

Specs are:

Kingston Technology Part No.: KVR266X64SC25/512
Upgrade Size: 512MB
Memory Kit: 1x 512MB
Module PIN count: 200-PIN
Memory Generation: DDR
Module Speed: PC2100, DDR266
MHz of Module: 266MHz
Latency of Module: CL2.5
KVR266X64SC25/512 DIMM Type: SODIMM, SO-DIMM, Small Outline DIMM

But I've found conflicting sources on the web, some say that a MK2 needs pc2100 , others pc2600

I had assumed that the person who installed it knew what they were doing, but maybe not.

I have no way of testing the ram, if it's the right speed, I have to assume that it's a bad stick (it could be a bad memory slot on my machine).

I believe that mine can take a 1gb stick to max out the ram, is this correct?

PC2600 ??? I think he meant PC2700 and yes a PC2700 will fit/replace a PC2100...it will run at the lower speed. Now I can not remember if a 1GB will work on yours or not. I think it will but just not sure

oops 2700

Must be a bad stick then, the machine won't boot when it's in place.

Yep a 1GB of 2100 or 2700 should work in there fine in your Mk2. I have done that before. It shows the max for a Mk1 as 768 in the official published data but they didn't have 1gb sticks back when that was originally published, 1GB will work in them too.

Definitely recommend trying to get a 1 GB memory stick. Recommend 2700 speed, not sure if 2100 will work in a Mk2.

(CF-18 are parallels in many ways to CF-29, and CF-29 Mk1 takes 2100 but Mk2 requires 2700)

The official Panasonic site shows 2100 in Mk1,2 and 3 for the CF-18. Then 3200 DDR2 on the Mk4 and 5. For the 29 they show 2100 Mk1, then 2700 for the Mk2,3. But like a few other things I have found on that site it could be wrong.

The Mk2 and Mk3 CF-18 have the same CPU, sound card, chipset and video card. The early Mk3's had 2200 intel wireless and 256MB ram on-board, later on they changed it to 512MB on-board ram and 2915 wireless card standard. Not much difference between them.

I know the motherboards swap freely between the Mk1 to Mk3 models, the Mk1 has a extra wire running to the rear speaker plug in, the other end plugs in next to the regular speaker. Only real difference I have seen in them.
