Put in new 1gb ram. Total ram says 1280, it is a touchscreen model, I wonder why I'm not seeing 1536 like sadlmkr said. Anyway still like molasses. When I right click on desktop or any icon, takes sometimes 4 seconds before menu pops up. I ordered the techtuff adapter and am deciding on a ssd. I hope that will help out some. If not I might need some pointers on tuning the o.s.

Just checked CF-29 toughwiki, I have CF-29E, which is Mk 2 which only has 256 on motherboard. Could it be that the Mk2 is that much slower due to lower ram and processor type and speed, or could I be having software issues? I will get ssd going first and see what happens.

It does sound like it's dragging some software wise. You may need to do a software clean up, or if it's too bad a whole new install.

When I install ssd it will be a clean install and hopefully that helps. I will follow up when I get it done.

11/06 update
Waiting on tufftech adapter, ebay says shipped but no tracking (coming from canada so i know it will be slower). SSD coming next Tuesday. getting excited.

Ok, installed 32gb sata 2 ssd, clean install of windows xp professional sp1 with recovery disks. Installed sp3, blue screen of death, checked code and disabled wifi. It appears I need to upgrade the driver. But WOW!! Very fast now. Thanks for the ssd idea. Anyone have a suggestion of which driver I need to get?

I proved many years ago that the 256 MB Motherboard would support 2.25 GB total RAM. But, for some reason we keep pretending that the Panasonic site is correct. I found that the 2.25 made a noticeable different in my usage!

Did you try it on a MK2? I have a MK5 with 2.25 but never tried it in a MK1/2.
Fair for you/ Fair for me.
I chose to NOT be organized.

Does that mean I could put a 2gig ram card in my CF-29E? Which one would I need to get?

Also downloaded latest driver for wlan and everything is working good. Very fast.

I think it was Rob that did, sorry, no joy for Mark 1-3 256MB Momboard owners. I guess I need to read more carefully.

It is a limitation of the Intel 855GM chipset used on the Mark1-3, which only supports 64MB UMA. The Intel 915GMS used in the Mark 4 & 5 will support up to 128MB UMA.

Sooooo... The Mark 4&5 with only 256MB onboard RAM will support a 2GB Stick of DDR2 RAM for a total of 2.25GB.

No other Toughbook reported so far will exceed 1.5GB except those rare models of the Mark 4&5 with with 1GB of on board RAM, and they will support 1GB of DDR2 for a total of 2GB, minus UMA.
