Windows 7 on a 29 mk1?

Hi all,

I am a long time mk1 owner with xp, and I spent all day yesterday and half the night trying to install windows 7. All is fine until I try to get graphics/touch screen drivers to work, and also problems with hotkeys/sound. Has anyone successfully gotten a mk1 version to run windows 7 with sound and touchscreen? Do I need to go back to xp, or Unix? I could do without the touchsrceen, but not sound. I have searched this site and other forums also for threads of anyone who has done this successfully and come up empty. If I go back to xp, is there any way to do it securely and still be internet connected?

Recommend MK4 or 5 if you must have a CF-29. Makes sense as your innards will work. :) The one you want is a unit with 256 on board ram. It will take 2GB. Just a thought.
I'm running Mint 16 SSD on a MK1 btw.

It can be done, but just know it will be more single minded, one thing at a time. And it will run better tweaking the OS to use less resources. You will need over 1gb of ram for best results. (and I see you have 1.5 so that will work) stuff like factory handwriting utility won't have to be loaded.

How do you plan to use your Mk1?

Yours should have the 2100A wireless card, get at least a 2915ABG to replace it.

The CF-18 is the same basic hardware so you can look to some of those threads for help also.

CF-18B/C (Mk1) -- Intel 855GM
CF-29C/D -- Intel 855GM

There are lots of other threads linked in the TBT CF-18 Guide also.

For some of the special Panasonic drivers like Misc driver you will have to go to a newer unit and download that driver for it.

I have seen this link recomended before, but have never read through this page so it may be useful for reference.

I don't think speed is the issue. I have 7 loaded and things seem to operate fine, just can't get the sound to work. I think the speaker is tied in to the hotkeys somehow, and the driver for that does not seem to work. I get a "conflict message" after reboot telling me I need to get an upgraded driver from the manufacturer, and win 7 disables the drivers. I did disable the winhotkeys in the long shot that that was the conflict, but no change.

I did follow the long explanation on the adaptech posting and that is how I got windows 7 to use the 855 graphics driver, but video drivers still do not work. I was going to try to use some of the vista drivers, but the exe file will not unpack -- gives me the message something like "this will NOT work on this machine" (not exact quote). somebody said maybe I could use winrar to unpack the file? It isn't a zipped file though, just an exe file. The 855 drivers for the mk1 on the panasonic support site seem to support 2 devices, one - the display and the other the video. The display driver only loads one file into system32\drivers (and then the touch screen works), but the other driver (for video I think) wants to load around 30 files into system32\drivers. After I loaded that one, the display got real glitchy/jumpy.

So, if I could resolve those two issues 1) sound and 2) stable graphics, I think I would stay with windows 7. If not, I think I am looking at other options.

it's a self extracting zip file. run winrar on the exe to extract the contents. Then you can load the driver.

OK, here is the progress on the CF29 mk1 windows 7 install. Most everything is working, internet connects, I dumbed down windows 7 a bit so things run faster (disable Aero, etc.) but video playback is still super slow.

Using winrar, I upacked the viup package for the mk4 from panasonic, I was able to get the touchscreen, wireless LAN, Hotkeys, and sound working fine. There is still a device in device manager that is yelllow flagged, the Video controller. Video does work, but very slow. Also, the display is showing the standard VGA driver and not the driver for the 82855. I have documentation of how to install the 82855 driver on a CF18mk1, and in a CF29mk4?? (one method documented in notebook review, the other in Adaptech blog, both links above) Not sure which method is best for me to use.

The sound works but not quite as loud as I would like, but it was like that in XP also. The driver shows as the intel 82801 DB/DBM AC '97 audio controller. I thought I had a sigmatel device, but it doesn't show up in device manager/system devices.

A lot of the devices listed in device manager/system devices are showing no driver installed, or driver not needed. I assume I just leave those alone, or try to tweek things with the proper drivers?

Also, do I need these loaded in the CF29 mk1?

Panasonic Misc Driver
PCinfo
PcCommon
WSswitch
Battery Cal
DMI
ACPI

Like I said, I am close, things seem to all be working, but the one driver is flagged, video is a little slow, and display is running on generic VGA driver.

Right now,
Windows performance experience (1 to 7.9)
Processor 2.2
Ram 3.3
Graphics 1.0
Gaming 1.0
Hard Disk 4.4

Now look up black viper windows tweaks and go to the windows club website and download the UWT. Ultimate windows tweaker. On the tweaker make sure you hit apply after every tab. What version of windows 7 are you running? Do you plan on printing on this pc? lots of processes you an kill from running that will speed it up a lot.

That was one of my problems that I was having too. VLC did work better with W7 than media player
