Creating a Live DVD, CD, or USB with Linux of your choice that ncludes Persistence

#1 Post by UNCNDL1 »

I'm on the 53 reading with a slow internet connection so I can't download any iso's right now.
Interesting that there are 3 media to install a live distribution for your pleasure, weather trying to save data from a hard drive, try out a new flavour of linux, etc. DVD, CD, or USB...Here's where I started:
http://www.linuxforums.org/forum/debian ... e-dvd.html
The op on the linked forum wanted to make a live Debian DVD. You can go here to download a hybrid Debian iso in several flavors, one will fit on a cd and the others on a dvd or usb stick: http://www.linuxforums.org/forum/debian ... e-dvd.html
You could also as we've mentioned before use this tool that is cross platform: http://unetbootin.github.io/
Which is how I started out trying different versions that would fit on a cd.
Now I use the program included in the Mint distributions for LMDE2 and 18.1
USB image writer: https://community.linuxmint.com/softwar ... magewriter
Fun stuff while on the road 3 weeks out of four.
The persistence aspect is nice, as the more you use your live media, there more you can customize it to your taste.
Try before without installing. Of course the usb method is the fastest and you'll need a media drive that can read as well as write...
Enjoy :salute:

Thanks for the persistent USB Cleve.
MX-16 PAE or non-PAE.
$ uname -a
Linux Tough 3.16.0-4-586 #1 Debian 3.16.39-1 (2016-12-30) i686 GNU/Linux

Slow boot with non-PAE.....onto a CF-29 L with 1650 hours.

First step is running *xset m 8 1* in terminal to speed up the mouse.

1. The stick does not fit into the side. Possibly a place for a mini stick to live in the rear set up to boot with a W7 install on the hdd.

2. Personally I would want a ssd hard drive install.

3. The persistent disk saved xinput-calibrator (from Freedesktop.org/xinput *Debian Testing*) and /etc/modprobe.d/psmouse.conf. *options psmouse resolution=400*

4. Firefox history was not saved (in persistence) while the wireless settings were.

Nice boring (no issues) install. A nice break from OSX on the CF-52. Probably because I did it once before.:D

To answer your question Firefox seems a little draggy.

Thanks again.
Fair for you/ Fair for me.

What I've found (and really like) about MX-Linux (and antiX Linux) is their feature allowing to make a bootable usb drive with your flavour of linux onto it, with persistence. I tested it out last night using their download link:
http://mxrepo.com/snapshots/?C=M;O=D
And if you read at the top, "They are too large to burn on a standard CD but will work fine burned to a DVD or installed to a flash drive using unetbootin, antix2usb, or Rufus". The antix2usb feature is also on MX-16 but named something a little different. I think it's a great tool to have on the kitchen table desktop if you want to try out a different distribution, and also to carry with you when traveling around. I'm on the look out for some more of those micro usb drives that are smaller.
I sent you a larger one so it would not get lost in the fleet :salute:
edit: FF works fine on the installed version in the 53J...possibly our slower internet connection or the usb drive makes a difference?
edit/edit: The FF history is turned off on that stick (something I always do).
For fun I followed their video on getting Netflix to work with the 32 bit system and to get it to work after following the directions, I had to enable history to get her to play. Go figure...
Here is a video link that explains persistence, rufus, unetbootin, dd, etc:

On my persistent boot MX-15, and since I occasionally use more than one computer I set it up ext4. Looks like I have two. Both on shiny OSDisc drives. One stock persistent and then the second is created through MX and has all the updates.

And in the stick bucket I have several mini sticks. Three of them on a single floss string.

I'll see what I can do to make a persistent disk for MX-16. Eventually. :)

The dental floss is a great idea....that we have used before. (Cleve's idea) Aids in removal of mini-sticks. Because it is strong and fits through the tiny hole!

Pay no or limited attention to the above. I need to work on it.

Meanwhile MX-16 cloned the LiveUSB ....I am impressed once again with Antix /MX. Sweet.

BTW right or wrong I don't use root and home directories. Just /Home or "/". Never reasoned out the need for both. (talking about persistent sticks here.) I'm open to correction. :D

I need to brush up on pros and cons having one, the other, or both. On a lighter note, just ordered some 3.0 usb drives:
