Seems visually similar to Cinnamon desktop (or MATE for that matter) or the Zorin OS.

Software selection feels like an early Windows 95 computer.

I don't have my 29 or 30 on hand to test the responsiveness. Is there some purpose you are thinking to put it to?

Well then.

I do understand the thoughts behind all of the passwords. It's just more than I personally can deal with.

That's what the NOPASSWD option for /etc/sudoers is for. But I'll refrain from pontificating over security issues. I can be quite the Linux curmudgeon after a few drams. :D

What do I think:

1. 1.3 GB ISO so it installs from DVD or USB. That's not a problem if installed from a stick. (USB) as long as we are talking CF-29MK4 and later. ((or using boot manager on the CD and stick )) Just completed one of these type of installs on CF-29 MK1 using PlopLinux on CD and MX 14.4 Linux on USB. (486 no pae)
2. I don't see PAE mentioned in the text. Need to check that. PAE eliminates 29 MK1 to MK3. (Physical Address Extension) ummm force pae can be used but may cause issues.
3. Lots of good software. I really prefer the offered xfce desktop over cinnamon or mate. Firefox is standard which is o.k. VLC is good. .wine too which means GPS.
4. Definitely worth a try. I'm betting it would be quick with a ssd with no annoying Windows pop-ups.

General comment: Peoples definition of older machines is changing. To me older may be a CF-M34 or CF-28. The 686 iso again is MK4 CF-29 and later.

Someone with a fast wireless send me a DVD of the 32 bit iso and I'll give it a shot. Three hour download for me leads to issues.

I am a bit beyond worrying about the look and feel of the desktop. I switched to Linux because I couldn't afford COA's and then it turned out I liked it a lot better than XP.

I use a quick three letter password and have gotten used to passwords to where they don't bother me. But that's me. With my background playing with DOS the terminal is almost welcome. :)

I know, I know , security.. :swords:
Thank you for skipping the security lecture. :salute:

I do not recall hearing of the NOPASSWD option. Which means it is a 50-50 chance that I did or did not. Maybe I will check into that. If I remember. Currently I am deep into BIOS//usb issues on CF19 mk6. Looking at swapping BIOS chip.

What were we talking about? :D

I am downloading the 32bit version.

For my curiousity, I click on the How to make a bootable usb stick link.

I get this page.

How to create a bootable USB stick on Windows

Before you begin, you need to download Ubuntu ...

Some Linux guys seem to go out of their way to complicate things.
I will send you a disk Jeff.
To the Linux devotees: I am just having some fun. Please don't take this offensively. I use Linux live cds all the time to repair and diagnose issues.
