SOLVED - Need help with printer-LMDE2

I have installed LMDE2 onto a180GB Intel ssd in my 52GUN. I have a Canon Pixma iP90v printer that I am trying to get working. I tried to set it up with bluetooth but as soon as the laptop and printer paired up, they disconnected. After many attempts I removed the bluetooth module from the printer and plugged in the USB. I was able to get the printer setup with the USB connection but will not print. The test page gives a thin line across the top of the sheet of paper and nothing else, other than it wants to do that until it runs out of paper. Trying to print a text file has the document stuck at "processing" in the Document Print Status window. it has been like that for 15 minutes or more.

There is nothing wrong with the printer. I used it to print out a Customs form yesterday using an ssd with W7 and the bluetooth connection. I would prefer to get it working with the BT connection in LMDE2 but will settle for it using USB, as long as it works.

Any insight from the Debian users would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

EDIT: :pat: Doh!! Had the USB cable unplugged. Plugged in the cable and tried the text file again. This time the printer shot out each piece of paper in the machine without printing anything on them.

EDIT 2:Printing to the printer through the bluetooth connection works. I brought up the bluetooth applet that is in the system tray (?windows terminology) and had it look for the printer again. Again it found the printer, paired with it then disconnected. I clicked on the line that said the printer was disconnected and that brought up the status window and for the hell of it I clicked on the 'Send File...' button. I was able to browse for a file, selected the test text file I printed earlier through the USB and the file printed. Go figure. I almost think that a Microsoft programmer is clandestinely working as a Linux programmer. Anyways, I can now print using the Bluetooth connection, even though it shows that the printer is not connected through the bluetooth module. FYI. END EDIT

Try Canon or Pixma in package manager.

O.K. two packages showed up. Second one mentioned USB. Keyword Canon. CUPS is the printer section.

I'll get back to this later.cups-backend-bjnp and printer driver cjet.

Hmmmm.

Alright...I use a wireless printer so will have to wing it here.

Start with printer unplugged.
Launch LMDE2
In terminal

Code: Select all

dmesg
Plug in USB
Turn on printer
Wait a bit and from terminal

Code: Select all

dmesg
.

We are trying to see if pnp picks it up. If not you may need a USB/Serial driver. It should already be there.

I'll check back. EDIT https://sites.google.com/site/easylinuxtipsproject/18 END EDIT

I was trying to use the bluetooth wireless but gave up on it because the printer would get disconnected as soon as it had finished pairing with the laptop.

Yes, it picks up the printer.

Followed the sites.google link. Looked good until I went looking for a Link driver on the Canon site, finally found one on the English HK site but all they offer is source code and rpm packages.

What if we blame bluetooth instead?

I don't talk bluetooth but take a look at blueman(pkg mgr)....might not come stock.

Or

Code: Select all

man blueman
Seems like some OS disable the auto functions for bluetooth until told otherwise.

Where's kodeniner when you need him?

I guess it would help if I had bluetooth on this machine.....hmmm guess it is here.

The previous commands probably won't work in terminal....(blueman I mean)

ok, I found a .deb driver for an iP100, mine is an iP90. The "common" driver installs as per the site.google link instructions but the "ip100series" gives an error about a missing dependency, libtiff4. Libtiff5 is installed, libtiff4 is not shown in package manager, so the second part of the driver package will not install.

I will settle for the printer working with USB then later try and get the bluetooth working.

Just a quick thought....are you "admin" ...............in users and groups. I sign myself up as admin and then click all the boxes so I have dual permissions for everything. Is it right? I O No. :D
Research would tell but that's boring, I would rather work than research. :)

How about another thread entitled "" Canon Printer and Linux" Need a little guidance". You will get a lot of hits from the Linux crowd and maybe one of them knows something. :) Subtle jab at the lurkers. We are glad you are here btw.

FWIW
Printers (CUPS) did not work. (This is the web based one) Not enough models shown.

Print Settings did.

From the Main menu in MX-14 in this case.

For my Kodak Wireless Printer.
