Mint 17 on a CF-18 Mk3 restarts to a black screen

#1 Post by Mobus »

So like the title says I have a real nice shape CF-18F (Mk3) that I installed mint 17 on. I have 1.5GB ram and 80GB HD and everything seems to run great while in the OS. My problem starts when I try to use the 'restart' button on the shut down menu. It will start the shutdown of the OS and then go to a black screen. Power never cycles and just stays on with a black screen. Only way to get out of that is to hold the power button until it shuts off. If instead of using the restart button I go into terminal and type 'sudo reboot' it will restart with no problem going all the way through the whole cycle including bringing up the bios splash screen and then boot the OS again. I've been searching for a solution, and even tried the grub edit to add 'reboot=bios' and all the other switches/options associated with that to no avail. If anyone has dealt with this before please let me know what if any fix there is. I like Mint and how well it runs just would like to have this quirk go away if possible.

Thanks,
Mark

All updates installed? Sorry standard question.

I've seen a bug elsewhere.

I'll look it up after a while.

Have you looked at /var/log/dmesg.0 # I think this is the log before the shutdown.

As far as updates go yes all the updates through level 3 (level 4 and 5 considered not safe?) have loaded by default. I haven't checked /var/log/dmesg.0 # I'll have to take a look in there when I get home tonight, and let you know what it says.

I'm a bit new to using Linux so bear with me if I sound like a noob. I'm just trying to move away from XP without needlessly bogging a TB with Win 7. I've been on NBR/Panasonic as TB28fan since 2008 when I bought my first CF-28, and joined up here just recently. Two CF-28's, three CF-29's and now this CF-18 makes me one of those "can't just buy one" guys, lol.

My 2 cents. Sorry you are having problems. I'm thinking Mint17 might be a little much for the hardware.
Not sure but think 17 is not final release yet, and there are bugs. Mint 13 has support until 2017 and might be a better starting point. I would try the XFCE version found here:
http://www.linuxmint.com/edition.php?id=113
Works great on my MK1 CF-19 and MK5 CF-29 too. Jeff will definately help sort you out with diagnosis.

Mint 17 has Intel issue through several Models, though MK2 (CF-30) is fine. CF-19MK2 is also fine.

What's a noob among friends.

So I initially used Ubuntu 10.10 which ran fast, but it was sort of a pain because due to being unsupported everything was a manual process and I'm still getting acclimated to all this. It did however still exhibit this restart issue even in 10.10. Then I tried Ubuntu 14.04 which really ran slow. I then switched to Mint 17 which is a LTS release thru 2019. This runs very quick on this CF-18. The only thing that could make it better is if the front buttons worked and this restart thing is resolved otherwise I really like it.

Re: Mint 17 on a CF-18 Mk3 restarts to a black screen

Jeff should be able to sort out your Terminal after typing in dmesg, however the front buttons are a story for another day and time. Concerning the "restart" issue, from Ubuntu 10.10 to Linux Mint 17 is a giant leap in space. If the "restart" issue is happening back in 10.10, and continuing now that is one major issue to sort, probably hardware based. I'm thinking something current, something light i.e. xfce (see above), or Lubuntu: http://lubuntu.net/
but that is 14, maybe take a step back to 12 or so: http://lubuntu.net/blog/lubuntu-1204-now-available
Seriously, after trying some of the older model Toughbooks & Linux, you need to search for what works for you. Yes, it is a pain to get something that sort of works, but then have to do things manually. Last resort, try what I am using, this is the newest: http://navigatrix.net/index.php
However, an older version works better for the CF-28:

look for post # 8 to find the download iso.
Hope things work out for you

Where did they put the error log? Was that the whole thing that you sent?

I'm trying to find the section where restart is activated. Does yours look anything like the below.

Funny. I'm getting that in my CF-29 Mk-5 but with a straight Debian. The same OS in my Mk-3 reboots fine.

If you get as far as a black screen, the OS has probably done its job already and initiated shutdown + reset register set to signal the hardware. In my case I suspect some motherboard component hanging and can't flip from reset to bootstrap and won't pass to the next component in the chain. I'll have to experiment a bit.

Edit: I missed that part in the OP where you say that the behaviour is different between clicking a button and typing reboot. Ignore the above then. I would attempt to figure out what the restart button in your shutdown menu does so differently than a reboot command.

Jeff: you're in a better position to check that out since I don't run Mint. Should be trivial to figure out what the menu is doing.

Jeff,

That is the extent of my file. I'll look at it again tonight to see if there is any difference or anything that looks like what you showed.
