Mint 17 64 bit. Issues and answers.

#1 Post by SHEEPMAN! »

Mint 17 64 bit works fine on:
CF-53
CF-30 MK2

Screen flicker occurs with CF-30 MK3.

Answers will show up later if/ when we find them.

I thought since this was a LTS install that it deserved it's own thread.

32 bit untested on MK3 as of yet.

I started some reading and the "RC" = NOT final version.
No screen flickers on the MK3 CF-30KCPRQ2M using Mint 13-16,
but DOES flicker with Mint 17, any current flavour served up here:
http://www.linuxmint.com/release.php?id=22
Me thinks it has something to do with the GS45 (GMA 4500MHD video controller), but I'm sure others will chime in soon with hard data.
I went out on a limb, being a Linux Newbie and posted this thread in the forums asking a noob question:
http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=90&t=168383
:newbie:
Try this:
Code:
lsmod | grep vid
this will tell us the video module that it uses. (list modules and grab the video)
If you read through this post for a different machine, there are some helpful hints:
http://navigatrix.net/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=387
I'm on the CF-30MK3 using Navigatrix, and here is what my Termnal reads:
clevek@clevek-CF-30KCPRQ2M:~$ lsmod | grep vid
video 18851 1 i915
Just a starting point...I'll try this advice whilst booting up LM17 and report back after nap
ciao for now
Report to follow

One step at a time. Ran accross reference to glxgears ..."most distros have it loaded" so take a look.

I was thinking refresh rate was the culprit here...what say you? The machine in use is in the file name. Same drive, Mint 17 SSD used on both.

Sorry another double post here. Above paraphrase in quotes from Intel.
11. What's a good benchmark test for OpenGL* (GL) on Linux?

Often, glxgears is suggested as an easy way to see that GL is working. The nice thing about it is that it comes with most Linux distributions. Unfortunately, glxgears does not exercise GL much so it's not a good GL benchmark. Its frames per second (FPS) report only measures copying from the render buffer.

Instead, use "glblur -fps" or "sierpinski3d -fps" to rigorously test the graphics system. These programs come with the xscreensaver suite (please see http://www.jwz.org/xscreensaver, but download the binary from your distribution's repository or from http://rpmfind.net/Linux/rpm2html/searc ... creensaver).

The -fps option shows the CPU load figure with the FPS report. Glblur keeps the CPU load high but steady. Sierpinski3d* varies its load with the number of polys it uses. When its polys go up to 4,096, the load rises higher than glblur's load and sierpinski3d's FPS drops.

Whew, more reading needed. I'll try that Jeff. I did find this post which might help if it is just a video driver problem:

Work around that works to stop the flicker.

Set power manager to suspend when lid is closed.
When opened it's magic...no flicker.

Sorry Cleve, this works (see below) for some machines but NOT on my MK3. Neither nomodeset nor i915modeset=0. Ask me how I know.....nah, don't ask...I tried them and had to edit through the recovery console. :D Good practice. It can help on older machines. I need to take a look at the xorg wiki.
Code:
lsmod | grep vid
this will tell us the video module that it uses. (list modules and grab the video)

And so it goes.

Access bios and make sure screen is set to internal lcd. Flicker all gone. Re-setting to defaults will change this but you will notice. :D (when it flickers again).
I'm still looking for what makes the suspend and restart patch work. (line by line before and after in dmesg) Curiousity.

Can someone with an external monitor try this with bios at default please?

i can say ive tried the 32 bit on my mk2 from you jeff and had some issues, blew it up and loaded 64bit and hasnt shown some of the issues. on 32bit touch screen was about 1.5'' off to the left, and the battery randomly would show 0 and criticle and shut down and then reboot the machine it would be at 90%+....but on 64bit the touch screen is about 1/2 inch off...battery hasnt shown the issues...

Touchscreen is off normally as the machine with Live CD/DVD uses built in numbers. Too bad xinput_calibrator in not in the live cd package.

Another point is that 160 or more updates are used once installed, several to do with Xorg. I pretty much don't judge a RC version until it is installed. Your 32 bit problems are a little strange. If you do it again, see in bios whether it thinks it's a tablet or a touchscreen. (prefer tablet)

I just had a thought....if you had xinput_calibrate on a USB stick would it install on the Live CD version? And I assume if installing from a USB that files be saved on the USB. IOW it's open whereas DVD are closed) I need to try that ......I use DVD installs mostly. end edit
