Linux boat navigation OS

#1 Post by ADOR »

http://navigatrix.net/

I ran across this today on Ondisk.com. It sounded interesting so I looked it up. It is a Linux OS based on Ubuntu that is for boating and waterways navigation. Full hard drive install or run from usb. I haven't got that deep into it yet but it looks like something a couple of you might like to tinker with.

Bump. Can we please put this into the Linux Box?
I just read their documentation found here:
http://navigatrix.net/nxdoc/docs/overview.html
And I'm thinking this might be the ticket for those into boating that want to use an efficient Toughbook GPS program. Interesting stuff, Paul...thanks!

I ran the program off a 8 GB usb stick, and just to be sure I used these two commands in Terminal per Sadlmkr's thread here:
viewtopic.php?f=39&t=1841
and ran them to ward off evil spirits, can't hurt:
1. sudo killall gpsd #just to make sure
2. sudo gpsd -D5 -N -n /dev/ttyS2
wow, sats & data started reeling off down the page(s) in terminal,
The Sat page in menu locked onto 7 right off the bat, quickly...
I had to shut down, called into work for an emergency,
More to follow
P.S., read the documentation before / if you install on your hard drive. There is a note about NOT having your wireless on during the install, and several other notes to follow as well...

Great post Cleve.

I haven't checked the program yet...fire fighter training day and a good one. We got a lot done.

For those that don't know what Cleve does...when he has an emergency it is the real deal.

Meanwhile if you need help with a CF-19 on Linux talk to him. Or if you need to buy a CF-30MK2 and etc. I'm not saying where they will ship from...talk to him.

Good luck with the emergency Cleve, (for what you do, skill may be more important then luck for the team)

Here's a review of the program, with some helpful hints on getting the iso to load properly (2.1 GB):

I think this is well worth the time and effort for those that might want to run this type of software.

Update, downloading the iso and making a usb install seems harder than it should, although reading through the documentation others also have had issues. I gave up trying in Windows, and am burning several now in Mint 14 XFCE, using "usb creator" under the accessory menu. Easy to use. Will keep you all updated. Here's some information on the newest version of this interesting system:

I think that those using ham radios and single side band will like it too.

Easy to use but my attempt won't boot and is not seen from Linux. Do I try it again, or read the instructions....what to do? what to do?

edit 30 minutes later I will re-download the iso. endedit

Update with answer(s) maybe.
Jeff, I'll send you a usb install that works, I had alot of trouble also but did get one that worked. I had to use Linox and re-downloaded the iso, and then used a usb burn program from the mint menu to make the bootable usb. My notes are on my phone which is missing for awhile...
I ran it via the usb live first, and it worked out of the box, after I followed Sadlmkr's instructions above and here:
viewtopic.php?f=39&t=1841
Early impressions, and let's be honest here...I like Mint 15 & 16 that have the shortcut to menu with super Windows key...The system is an LXDE desktop using Ubuntu & X11 system, which is reported to work well with minimum hardware requirements.
I do like the different Navigation software choices pre-loaded, I think someone into boating would also.
Last night I installed Navigatrix onto a MK2 CF-19, and re-booted. The menu has touchscreen calibration choice, but when you select, it takes you to a blank Terminal page that does NOT let you do anything. I then right clicked on the menu choice, added it to desktop, and now when you use the desktop short cut or the menu key it takes you to touchscreen calibration aka "xinput_calibrator), and allows you to calibrate the touchscreen. I'll have to add Foxtrot GPS and see how the mapping software works and report back. Have a great weekend.
Side note, our daughter's car was declared "totaled", she's fine. We're looking at options since she's starting over from scratch after Insurance pays off the car...Life goes on
