GoBook XR-1

#1 Post by Springfield »

teo wrote:For info., before I bought the GD mentioned XR-1. I already bought one from other seller but without the caddy and battery. I received the unit a while ago and its perfect for what I need that why I bought another two to "anainstr(seller) coz he has with the caddy and battery. Its not as heavy as toughbook and it has only 12" screen which is my liken. Upon inspection it also well built with exception of two cover door on which I think is not really sealed. Let see if it is isolated to the internal. It has the feature that I need. The WLAN has two slot in the same place side by side whether you like the mini pci card or mini pci-e card. I am not yet confirm If it has the gps but show on bios. I will start dismantling the unit this coming weekend. I laso want to verify if the cpu is upgradable. Why I mean is if it is socket type.

Anyway, If somebody can provide an schematic for this unit. It will be the best to mod.

Teo how do you like the GoBook so far? Got mine yesterday and so far it seems pretty good, maybe not as rugged as a real Toughbook but it is rugged and seems to have good performance.

Does your have GPS? Dis you open it to see if the CPU can be upgraded?

I was talking to Teo the other day and he did not have it yet. Did yours come with GPS and fingerprint reader and how was the 2 batterys, did they hold a charge ?. I noticed there is a discussion board/forum on yahoo on the Gobooks.

Don't believe mine has a GPS. Although it shows to Enable in the BIOS, the seller called GD who said no GPS was installed, and WinFast Navigator does not see anything on the com ports. However I also got one of the IX-260 models that someone (you Blair?) pointed out which is supposed to have a GPS -- maybe that GPS is compatible with XR-1 ....

Just charged the batteries using a low watt charger, will try them tonight. But need to get a 4+ amp charger for this before doing a real battery refresh.

Yes it was me http://www.ebay.com/itm/220864270417?ss ... 1439.l2649 and http://www.ebay.com/itm/Itronix-GoBook- ... 336c895053 . I picked up one too last night, laptop + caddy $79.00 + $11.00 charger. Have you got this one yet or are you still waiting for it to come in. Kinda wondering what kind of shape it is in and if it is the GoBook III IX260 or a IX260+. Been trying to find a service manual or a regular manual but no luck yet but still looking .Good question and not sure if the GPS would work on the other one or not, was it you who was asking this on the yahoo forum ?

Yep, don't know if there are any better sources of info. What charger did you get for the IX-260 and do you know if it would also work for a XR-1 (IX-270)?

Ok! I've got a chance to work on these unit I have. I installed xp on one unit and Win 7 to the other one. Btw, I've got three unit and the last one is for thinkering. The two wrks flawlessly with said OS's.

The 3rd unit without the Hdd, caddy and battery is for you know, a test bed, Lol. Now! here is the good news it is socket type with PGA479M socket. It means it can upgraded like the cf-51. I say the best CPU for this is the T7600 but a bit pricey. I don't have spare right now but I will borrow the one on CF-51 with 2.0Ghz. Remember only with the 667Mhz fsb. Let see how it perform. Anyway, this also can be upgraded to 4gb RAM. If you guys remember my comment regarding the two cover door that is like not sealed but I found out that they are isolated from the inside. So, its still water resistant but my worry is the outside terminal may coz a short circuit eventhough it is isolated.

Now! here is the bad news. Its pain on the ass..to dismantle this unit. there are a ton of screws not mention a hidden screws but I am very careful and finally got it. My problem now is I am not taking an id to each in everyone of those screws. Maybe I will only use a common sense. In addition before you go ahead on dismantling this unit. First is to take off the thin plastic covering in front of keyboard(where the indicator lights) and the thin plastic covering on the palmrest. By doing that it will show you first hidden screws aproximately morethan ten. I haven't counted yet! Lol Almost each in every screws from the body will have to unscrews. On top of the after taking off rubber covering on each corner, it will show up another hidden screws. Be very carefull on the front two rubber protection. You must take out first the push release latch by pulling it a bit and again it will show up another screw on the rubber protection. To make story short or to give you an advice before doing it. Study carefully and make a plan. If necessary, right a tag on each screws to designated location.

Here is a snap shot of th mbo. after taking it off the cpu:

Great info Teo! Really appreciate your skill figuring out how to crack this nut. Looks like a lot of trouble, so don't think I will be upgrading my XR-1 any time soon LOL.

That works for a GB II or III, but not enough amps for the XR-1 that needs at least 4 amps. I'm running it now with a Lenovo 19v with only 3.4 amps, so must charge the battery with the notebook off to avoid overheating the PS.

Teo what power adapter are you using for the XR-1? Looks like the plug size might be 2.5 mm X 5.5mm?

I use the hp adapter just modded the tip( change the tip with dead AC from china, same on IBM and for CF-29 plug)Lol. It has 18.5Vdc and 3.9am output. I even use the dell AC with 19Vdc, 3.34amp, also change tip Y type a barrel and one for Getac unit.

Teo. Do you have a picture of the XR-1 that shows the whole base off. I just want to make a note of ALL the screw holes. I just might pick up one of them.
