O.K.....Android in a Panasonic JT-B1.

Tablet is in a dock. USB GPS BU353-S4 connected to the dock.

I need a program to recognize the BU-353.

Anyone?

BU-353 compatibility with Android OS
« on: February 22, 2011, 02:27:46 pm »
Hello! First let me say I have been very impressed with the performance of the BU-353, it is very accurate and acquires a lock faster than my navigation software can start. It's my current software that gives me the trouble. I installed a computer in my car running windows and a front end software (Centrafuse) to handle music and gps navigation (other things too but those were most important to me). I've been extremely disappointed with it from day 1 because my cell phone does those things and more about 1000% better and easier, so I'm trying to see if I can design a system running the Android OS, specifically with the Samsung Galaxy Tab. The problem is I don't think the internal GPS on the tablet will work well once it's mounted inside my dash so I would like to use the BU-353 as an external antenna. I know that a usb adapter is available for the Galaxy Tab but I was curious if anyone here could tell me if the BU-353 would work if I plugged it in.

Thank you!

Android has a built-in drivers for our USB GPS Receivers in it's Linux kernel (PL2303). Unfortunately, we do not know how to get it to work on Android because there's no mechanism in the Android OS to receive GPS Data through a USB port (as explained here: https://code.google.com/p/android-serialport-api/).

We would suggest to visit the following forum for advice and help with Android: http://forum.xda-developers.com/filter.php?cat=Android

If you are looking for a GPS receiver that works on Android, perhaps, you'll be interested in one of our Bluetooth GPS receivers: (http://www.usglobalsat.com/s-17-bluetooth.aspx). This will require you to use our GPSInfo app for Android, which makes the external Bluetooth GPS receiver as your default GPS source.

You can find the app from here: https://play.google.com/store/apps/deta ... h.provider

We found a solution:

If your device is running Honeycomb and above (Android 3.1 ~ Android 4.2+), then you can use the "UsbGPS4Honeycomb_MR1_alpha" app to get the USB GPS Receiver working. Please download it from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpos ... stcount=58

This app was created for us by a developer in France, and it appears to be working, although, we can't guarantee that it'll work on all Android devices.

I would suggest you refer to the video the developer created regarding how to use the app: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=scDqVFPN9lU

If you need further help with this app working on your device, we suggest contacting the developer through the forum posting where the app is found.

I finally got back to this. The JT-B1 has a micro usb first of all but I am connecting the BU to one of the two USB on the dock.
Does anyone know if these are powered by the dock?
I found a cupla apps that say they will read it...now for narrowing it down. Just found Locus app seems promising. Reading is one thing...useful maps are another.
Thank you Shawn, I'll go back and read your input now.

As always,

J'd...
