CF31 GPS power usage

#1 Post by Shawn »

I have a CF31 mk3 with a original Leadtek GPS installed.
I also have a Custom-Toughbooks Ublox GPS for a CF-31. I think it is a 5 or 6 series.
Any one know the power usage for each? Which uses less power.

A Leadtek LR95484S gps unit is supposed to have 165mW continious drain when turned on.
Not sure about the Ublox GPS.

The Ublox is a LEA 6S

The product sheet lists it to use 121mw @ 3V for continuous

https://www.u-blox.com/sites/default/fi ... 002%29.pdf

I wonder how much of a difference that would make on battery life?

quick back of the envelope calculation

165-121=44mW per hour of runtime
roughly half a watt in 10-12 hours full charge ...
roughly 1 percent of battery life

best case 5-10 minutes additional runtime when choosing ublox instead of leadtek and having gps always on

Actually the CF31 uses a LR9101. It uses 45mA of power. That converts to 148mW @3.3v
