CF31 motherboard swap mk1..mk2

#1 Post by Shawn »

Just an info post.
You can not swap a CF31 mk2 motherboard into a mk1 housing, or the mk1 MB into a mk2 housing.

Some of the connectors are slightly different, but that's not a big issue as long as you have the SD card reader and USB board to match the motherboard.

The mk2 has auto antenna switching which means the board surrounding the bluetooth card must also match the motherboard.

Now the real reason the swap won't work is the touchpad..mk2 uses a different model and brand of touchpad.
When you are done with the swap the touchpad will be upside down..Finger right and the pointer goes left. Finger up and the pointer goes down.
Mixing and matching touchpad PCB and cables won't work either.

I am off to look for software to flip a touchpad response...

Maybe a different driver in windows would work?
Don't know as I have not booted windows yet, Just mint 17.2

It's reversed in the BIOS diagnostic program also.

Just turn the laptop upside down. It might take some getting used to having the screen under your elbows, but hey- the touchpad works great! :)

I know you can switch the buttons in most drivers, but inverting the touch input is something I have never seen.

The touchpad itself only has 4pins on the ffc..Maybe reversing it would work.
I am going to investigate a CF30 schematic/touchpad. Maybe Synaptics will have details about the touchpad before the usb - PS/2 interface.

I found this..It looks like I could reverse polarity and it would work. I guess the top sheet has a pos and a neg and so does the bottom..

Here is some more info on the swap. For future lurkers.

Some of the connectors are different. They went from the lift flap ffc connector to the slide out ffc connector.
The SD card reader and cable needs to match the MB.

USB ports PCB must match MB.
Fan is slightly different but works and fits the same. mk1 has metal cover and mk2 has plastic cover.

Base plate is different as how memory cover attaches. Memory cover from mk2 will not fit mk1. But mk1 cover will fit mk2

The battery/ HDD cable assembly won't plug into the different mk touchpad PCB.

Ok! Shawn. I had MK1 unit with beaten up case. I put it on an MK2 unit base. Here is the pita. Every guts from MK1 unit must be transferred to MK2 unit base including touchpad and its led indicator. If you don't transfer the led indicator, it will mess up too! Funny thing is the hdd indicator goes to MP and the wireless indicator goes to capslock, lol..Even the heatsink is different by comparison. As what I've said everything must be transferred. Luckily I had new touchpad that I bought recently. I've carefully enough pulled out the palmrest so that I can reuse it and its like nothing happen. Now! everything are in perfect working condition.

I did not notice the LEDs being different. I will have to check.
Reversing the polarity did work for the touchpad.

I can not remember about the heatsink..I know one had a plastic fan cover and one was metal.
