Teo! I think this is your greatest ToughBook! Now you need to add LED backlight display LOL . . .

I have a friend in OZ land that really could use a great M34 with GPS. Please share the secret of how to make a good GPS installation in M34. What kind of antenna and how do you mount it on the lid? Is that a custom mount or something us guys can do too?

Cross-posting info about loading OS from a USB stick onto the hard drive.
From the Yahoo Toughbook group, member alphamale2039
Hello, i have several toughbooks, and had lots of problems installing Windows XP on the CF-M34 and CF-18s.

The way to do this is rather simple:

Disconnect the harddrive on your CF-m34 (mk3 400Mhz) or CF-18 mk1 900Mhz.

Then boot from a bootable USB-stick that has windows xp on it

turn off your CF-m34 or CF-18

reconnect the harddrive

boot again.

The CF-M34 (mk3 400Mhz) and CF-18 then still boots from the USB stick.
Windows XP install sees the harddrive
and you can then install Windows XP on your CF-m34 or CF-18.

This way i was able to create several partitions. The install worked totally 100% oke. After complete install, the USB stick can be removed and your machine will boot from the internal harddrive.

NOTE:
Oh, i forgot to tell that you have to turn the power off, before you connect/disconnect the harddrive. Otherwise you could damage your motherboard of your CF-m34/CF18.

Minor update, concerning difrences between the Cf-M34 mk1 (Celeron 300Mhz) and the mk2 (Celeron 400Mhz)

videocard = Neomagic 2.5MB vs Lynx 4EM+ (4mb)

CPU = Celeron 300Mhz vs Celeron 400Mhz with SSE
mini-pci = mk1 doesnt have a mini-PCI holder / mk2 does have one mini-pci holder. The mini-pci holder can be exchanged from a mk2 to an mk1.

Minor update 2: concerning installing an OS onto a CF-m34
After you have a working OS, you can use Symantec Ghost (from the Hirens Boot CD) to make a ghost image.. The re-install of a Ghost image only takes 4 minutes for a 6.5 harddrive, instead of 40 mins during the install method i described earlier in this topic.

3) the CF-M34 400Mhz uses a Toshiba LTM08C343P 8.4" TFT PANEL (also used by the CF-48)

Hi, Ador, I found some more variant codes for the CF-M34 on a german toughbook site (http://www.toughbook-forum.de/viewtopic ... 355202a8a7).

Here is their list, including the Celeron 400Mhz version (that i have).

--
CF-M34xx
|+-- HDD (& Display)
| A: 10 GB
| D: 30 GB
| E: 20 GB / TFT standard
| P: 20 GB / TFT transflektiv
| H: 30 GB / TFT standard
| T: 30 GB / TFT transflektiv
|
+--- CPU
T: Intel Mobile Celeron 300 MHz
W: Intel Mobile Celeron 400 MHz with SSE
J: Intel Mobile Pentium III 400
N: Intel Mobile Pentium III 700
R: Intel Mobile Pentium III 800
U: Intel Mobile Pentium III 866
V: Intel Mobile Pentium III 933
C: Intel Mobile Pentium M 1.0GHz (Centrino)

The letter for the Intel Mobile Celeron 400Mhz is W
Also concerning standard harddrives, i have several CF-M34s from Germany that are installed with a 10 gig harddrive. The corresponding letter is A. I also have 6,4 variants but dont know the corresponding letter.

and the mini-pci slot for the mark 2 can be used for the mark 1. I tested this by swapping the electronics, and it worked without a problem. So, for all CF-M34 mark 1 users, this could be handy, because they can then use standard mini-pci cards on their old, but trusty CF-m34

I made a little spec-sheet of the CF-M34 with the Celeron 400MHz:

MK2 ?

CPU Intel® Mobile Celeron 400Mhz (Coppermine-T) with SSE
RAM 256 MB Max PC100 / PC133 (256MB when using a 256MB dimm, the 64MB onboard is not used)
BIOS: V2.02L14 (09/14/2001)
VIDEO MEMORY 4 MB Silicon Motion SM712 LynxEM+
CHIPSET INTEL 440MX (82443MX)
SOUND INTEL 440MX AC97 (Cirrus Logic CS4299)
MODEM Agere Systems LT WinModem 56k AC97
USB 1.1
DISPLAY 8.4” TFT 800 X 600
BATTERY Li-ion 10.8V, 3.4 Ah
SIZE 9 " X 1.7 " X 7.4 "
WEIGHT 1.7 kg / 3.8 lb.

Could you update the CF-M34 faq ?

Thanks from MasterBlaster2039 / Richard Vermeulen

I seen a link to that site before and looked around some but for some reason Google translate every couple of pages was swapping back to German and I would have to re-translate. Got old after a while.

Thanks, I will get this info added.

I split the Mk2's, but look at the cpu listing

CPU Intel® Mobile Celeron 400Mhz (Coppermine-T) with SSE
RAM 256 MB Max PC100 / PC133 (256MB when using a 256MB dimm, the 64MB onboard is not used)
BIOS: V2.02L14 (09/14/2001)
VIDEO MEMORY 4 MB Silicon Motion SM712 LynxEM+
CHIPSET INTEL 440MX (82443MX)
SOUND INTEL 440MX AC97 (Cirrus Logic CS4299)
MODEM Agere Systems LT WinModem 56k AC97
USB 1.1
DISPLAY 8.4” TFT 800 X 600
BATTERY Li-ion 10.8V, 3.4 Ah
SIZE 9 " X 1.7 " X 7.4 "
WEIGHT 1.7 kg / 3.8 lb.

Coppermine was the code for Pentium 3 cpu's. What did you use to double check the hardware?

I found some more information about the CF-M34 antenna on the german http://www.toughbook-forum.de forum

---
The Antenna on the left side of the CF-M34 can be 3 versions:
1 - Antenna with blue cap is for USA CDMA
2 - Antenna with grey cap is for GSM/GPRS
3 - Antenna with black cap is for WLAN or Bluetooth (all my CF-m34s mk2 celeron 400MHz have the black cap, and indeed i looked at the wire that comes from it, and its a wireless connector for mini-pci cards ! Didnt know this until i looked at the german toughbook forum. So, now its easy to upgrade to wireless. Simply have to find a mini-pci wifi card that has ONE connector for wifi.

Ador, Can you include this in the Cf-M34 faq ?

and big thanks to the german toughbook forum. The original message is in German, so now English speaking toughbook users, can also read this information. Source = http://www.toughbook-forum.de/viewtopic ... 50&start=0

Still updating from time to time. Will be putting up the Windows 7 on a Mk7 install guide here shortly. I will be working on installing it 7 tonight on one of my units.

Ran across this today.

CF-M34NPFZPM

Lot of them on ebay right now. The "P" wasn't in the guide. All of them that are on there, about 8 of them all have the same coa. It's a windows 2000 / windows NT work station 4.0 coa on them. So that is what it has to be. ( I am guessing)

This has been added to the guide.

P-DUAL WINDOWS 2000-NT Work Station 4.0
