TBT CF-M34 FAQ

#1 Post by ADOR »

Well after several of us are back playing with M34's now lets pool what we know. I have been doing some digging on them but the info didn't come as easy as the CF-18 FAQ (yes I know I need to take pictures and finish that too, lol) so lets get this started, lol.

Customer Special Configuration:

When a customer orders multiple units of the same configuration they are designated a Panasonic Customer Configuration Number which replaces the fourth & fifth letters in the standard model number.

In the event of the same customer ordering multiple units of different configurations, they are designated additional Customer Configuration Numbers....These configurations are not available in the Panasonic Configurator....these units can often be of a standard configuration with subtle additions such as external hardware....or more significant such as a non-standard Bios that disables the use of WLAN/Bluetooth/Modem.

A Customer Configuration is just that....tailored to the customers needs.

Example; CF-M34xxx90x....This number (90) is designated to Toyota (US)....the full model number is not available in the Panasonic Configurator....so the configuration....subtle or otherwise, is unknown!!

GPS OPTIONS

FACTORY GPS

Image

The factory gps cover goes over the serial port and uses the serial port hold down to hold the cover in place. I have seen reference that the M34 uses the same GPS engine as the CF-28. I have seen several complaints of the factory unit performance (CF-28 threads).

CF-WGP341 factory retrofit GPS part number

USB GPS

These GPS units come in several brands and sizes. Some are as small as a flash drive other have a long cable and antenna.

Image
Image

COMPACT FLASH GPS

To use this option you will need a PCMCIA to compact flash adapter. The unit then plugs into the compact flash slot. These are easy to remove and you can leave the adapter in the computer. These usually have a external port so you can plug in a external antenna. Prices will vary.
Image

BLUETOOTH GPS
There are a host of Bluetooth devices out there today. The M34 was never offered with Bluetooth from the factory but like anything else it doesn't mean you can't install it. Your options for installing Bluetooth are USB, internal M-PCI dedicated or combo with WI-fi card, PCMCIA Bluetooth card, internal hack with USB or other connectors. With this mod done you can use pretty much any Bluetooth device with your machine.

Gobook 2 PCMCIA GPS

The gobook 2 has a PCMCIA GPS unit that would fit the M34. It is a little taller than a normal card so it might have to be installed with the machine apart. Then all you would have to do is put in a antenna.

WIRELESS INSTALL

INTERNAL WIRELESS
The CF-17,CF-M34 Mk1,2,3 Have one M-PCI card slot on the mother board. This usually holds the modem, LAN or LAN/MODEM combo card. To install wireless on these older, non wireless models you will have to remove the old card and install the wireless card that you want. Once you have your card swapped in you will now have to decide how you want to route the antenna wires. I have seen some complaints in some of the old threads about running the antenna behind the screen or just rolled up under the motherboard doesn't give out enough signal. For proper signal you will have to see about running a external antenna. You can do this one of two ways. One mod the antenna on the left hand side of the unit that is for the old cell phone cards if your unit is equipped. (list cf-28 antenna mod info here). Another option would be to find a bump out either off of another computer (example cf-18/19 GPS bump out) http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3761/9217 ... e726_z.jpg it has a nice flat base and is used for modding antenna in on others computers as well or from another source to screw to the side of the computer base to hold the antenna. You could mount this base on the lid but it would need to be thinner. Example of this thinner base is a custom mod done by one of our own is below.

There is also available a dual M-PCI card for these laptops and it can be modded into the older machines.

PCMCIA wireless is also available. There are shorter cards that can be used and the door closed when not in use saving you from having to pull the card in and out when not in use.

HISTORY

Image
Image
Back in 2003, a Panasonic Toughbook CF-M34 actually saved the life of a US military member in the 82nd Airborne Division. The soldier was in Iraq when he came under fire. He was carrying the Panasonic Toughbook in his backpack. A bullet struck his backpack, passed through the screen and the keyboard of the Toughbook, and lodged in the solid magnesium-alloy casing...saving his life. The unit still functioned except the screen and keyboard.

ANOTHER M34 VARIATION

Found by MasterBlaster2039

There appears there are two MK2's. Ones found in the area of Germany have a Celeron CPU like the Mk1, not a Pentium 3, like the USA Mk2's.

I found some more information about the CF-M34 antenna on the german http://www.toughbook-forum.de%20forum

---
The Antenna on the left side of the CF-M34 can be 3 versions:
1 - Antenna with blue cap is for USA CDMA
2 - Antenna with grey cap is for GSM/GPRS
3 - Antenna with black cap is for WLAN or Bluetooth (all my CF-m34s mk2 celeron 400MHz have the black cap, and indeed i looked at the wire that comes from it, and its a wireless connector for mini-pci cards ! Didnt know this until i looked at the german toughbook forum. So, now its easy to upgrade to wireless. Simply have to find a mini-pci wifi card that has ONE connector for wifi.

(yes yes there is more to come, lol)

CF-17

Yep the first one that started the thin and small series, carried on by the M34 before there was the CF-18.

Does anyone have a picture of the dual M-PCI card daughter board?
Also, if I am understanding correctly it is only in the MK7?

Still working on it but if you have something to add shout right in.

Did the M34 at one point have the option for dual PCMCIA slots?

I think I have a pic of it at home, I will check tomorrow when I am back. The MK7 was the only one with the dual PCI so it could run both the LAN/modem card and the 2100 wreless card. The bar style cover on the MK7 was the wifi antenna. The swing up style antenna was for the old style wireless card and was generally found on the 400MHz model, although it did come on others. The one I have with it still works and the transfer rate is usually about 11MPS.

The great thing about this thread is that I had all but lost any interest in playing around with my CF-M34's, but I suddenly have a renewed love for them as they (besides the CF-17) were the only ones of their kind. They are small, but still serve a very special purpose niche and I look forward to modding another MK7!
One CF-52, four CF-18's, 4.5 CF-28's, one CF-29, five CF-M34's, two CF-37's, one CF-P2 and two CF-P1's. There are also two Getac A320T's, one Fieldpac and two IBM Transnotes. Not to mention the AMD 5600 CPU with three monitors and several HP PDA's. Whew! Must quit buying...no, must have MORE! Then there are the weapons...

The factory style gps antena is located on the serial port. It cover the serial port left side of the M34 to be exact by the same antena bump out of CF-18 and CF-19 gps antena.

For Info.

Forgive the double post.

2700 512 ram now on board. Total 768.

This beauty sucks anything up.

Especially impressed with the way it takes any USB... as in pen drive.

At this point it will run anything (Linux) that is not pae (whatever that is). Eliminates 12.04 Ubuntu. I know most of you guys don't care but I do.

I'm with Blair. Good keyboard. The keyboard is laid out a lot better than the the CF-18/19.

Teo,
Are you sure that the CF-M34 used the same bump out as the CF-18/19. I finally ran across a factory GPS bump out picture on a MK7 and it looks different?

I HAVE UPDATED THE FIRST POST WITH MORE INFO AND PICTURES. ADDED MK1,2,3,7 MOTHER BOARD PICTURES, NEED SHOTS OF THE MK4,5,6 OR AT LEAST CONFIRL THEY ARE THE SAME AS OTHER.
