Dell Poweredge 600SC "CPU Upgrade"

#1 Post by Azrial »

Hi Guys, I have an old Dell Poweredge 600SC Server. It had a 2.4 GHz P4 in it and I wanted to upgrade the CPU to a 2.80 GHz HT CPU. Does anyone know off the top of your head if this old Mobo will see it and use the Hyperthread?

The reason I ask is that Dell insisted on using an odd proprietary fan connector and I am too frugal (cheap) to buy and wait on the correct adapter at $6.95 and $8 shipping! If I cut off the connector on my Zelmann Heatsink and Fan I want to make sure beforehand that I will actually see the increased speed!
I am what I am, somebody has to be.

Well the BIOs misidentified the 2.8GHz as a 1.4GHz and then failed to allow it to boot, or even to get into the BIO Setup routine. The RAM I have put it is also problematic! I HATE OEM boxes! Give me a good white box built by a competent Tech any day!!! :cussing:

You mean "ECC" (Error correcting code), not "eec" :tool: :sucks: :P :D :D :D

Thanks for correcting it :pat:
I thought/was sure I had it correct , your server must of misplaced a 1 or 0 somewhere
Rob What type ram does it run? Its a good idea to use ecc ram in it , not the more error prone eec type :damnit:

That server would run DDR 266 ECC RAM

:pat: Thanks, that is exactly what the RAM problem is, it is not ECC! I was sure that it was, but I had forgot that RAM got put in another machine some time ago! Thanks for making me check my work!

As to the processor, I am not sure that it is worth the effort for such a minor upgrade. The last BIOs for this old machine was written in 2006. I can not complain, I got it for free off a scrap pile and all it needed was for the CPU to be reseated and some TLC! It has served me for 2.5 years! :D

You can check if it's ECC by looking at it... If it has two little extra chips in the middle then it is ECC. See the picture!
