Truck advice

#1 Post by Shawn »

My life has been "complicated" lately. So other opinions would be good.
I have an issue with my truck.
2003 Ranger 120,000miles

So, I leave my therapist and head home. Approx 25miles secondary 2 lane roads. 45mph speed limit etc..
All was well. Got to hometown Subway. stopped ate and chatted for a couple hours. The one older gal was working and it is not often we can chat for lengths.
Go out and try to fire up the truck.
No joy. Cranks over and fires a couple times.
Release the key and it stalls.
Repeat multiple times with same results
Check fuses,, swap fuel pump relay with trailer light relay.
No joy.
Now it is raining....FMR
Friday is just not a good day for me.
Now what to do...Call a tow truck for the 4 block tow to home I guess.
1st choice no drivers
2nd choice no drivers
3rd choice 2 hour wait
FMR again....Now what..
Back inside a unknown customer with southern accent ask if I had a chain? He would tow for free.
A little sketchy but I am out of options..
He finishes and heads out back.
I get back into truck and figure twist the key one more time...
The darn thing starts... I wait a minute and don't see stranger or truck so I head home.
Turns out he is right behind. I pull over, say thanks and wait for him to leave.
Then I pull in my driveway...
Have not tried truck this morning.

Oh and I have a OBDII code reader built into the dash. No codes.

I am thinking maybe ignition switch is starting to fail..

Other ideas before I start throwing parts at it?

To me sounds like relay/module, maybe loose power or ground hidden some where... I hate intermittent issues like that. I've had lazy relays cause similar issues, high resistance in grounds and powers

So it's turning over just not starting, what engine 2.3, 3.0 or 4.0?

When it's doing this try this (may need a extra pair of hands)(remember autozone and big chain stores like that have a loan a tool program, but it takes a deposit)

Check fuel rail for fuel pressure (if you have pressure the fuel pump and fuel pump relay shouldn't be the problem) You should also be able to hear the pump turn on a pump with everything off. (but just because you can hear it doesn't mean it has proper pressure)( if it has a return line to the tank the regulator may be bad bleeding off more pressure than needed)(not sure what injectors you have and don't know the minimum pressure needed to make them fire some GM injectors won't even fire unless they have over 20 psi of pressure on them, usually the fuel system will be more than that)

How long has it been since the fuel filter has been changed?

Check for corrosion on battery terminals, starter connections, and engine grounds. (Reason for this is if voltage is dropping very low while cranking because of corrosion preventing full voltage it can make the computer act stupid and not work correctly)

Any kind of factory alarm system on the truck? (not on a Ford but have seen that be a problem before on a honda)

Need to pin point if it does this only when it's "hot" been running or if it will do it when it's "cold" sitting at home all night also.

I have seen on a jeep where it was doing the same thing, the owner just wiggles the relays in the box under hood, she is still doing that after a year far as I know. Replacing the relay didn't help so it's a loose wire somewhere. Either inside the box or underneath. Just two little wiggles and it cranks.

Have a old spark plug handy and pull a plug wire, put the old plug in it and ground it out. While cranking do you have spark?

I will think of more stuff to check.

It is a 3.0
It was turning over and firing like it started. As soon as I release the key it dies.
I did not swap the powertrain control relay.

-------------------------------------------------------------------
When it's doing this try this --------------TRY what.. I am confused.
------------------------------------------------
I do have a fuel pressure gauge setup.. Need to find it...Although I think my on board OBD setup reads fuel pressure.
-------------------------------
Can't recall age of fuel filter, so I should swap it next.
------------------------------------------------------------
No alarm, Just Ford PATS system with the key.
-------------------------------------------------------
Started fine this morning.
-------------------------------
Spark plug test is a great idea.
I have a clip on one at work, so I will grab it.
----------------------------------------------------------
Battery terminals are clean. Just put in new battery two months ago.

14.6 volts at the computer driving down the road.
I will assume grounds are ok.
OBDII does not show fuel pressure on my truck. Probably no sensor.

Got a fuel filter just to swap to be sure.
I am leaning towards the PCM relay or the ignition switch.

No idea what was in filter.
I had an 'issue' while attempting to change it.
had to go with plan B before head exploded.

gee ... i forgot all about this thread ...
i was going to suggest dropping a few *midol* tablets in the gas tank ...
:boing:

i had a buick a few years back that had water in the filter .
swapped it out and dumped in a bottle of "heet" to get rid of any residual water/condensation .
after a week , i changed the filter again , just for GP .
two weeks later , the in-tank fuel pump failed .
yeppers , it let go while i was having a cup of coffee at a gee-dunk .
(you do not want to know what the local dealership wanted to change it)
