I have owned 3 hard tops and 2 travel trailers over the last 30 years and I can tell you this much if you plan on traveling any distance I would go with a hard top. They are easy to haul and cheaper on gas. Towing my 24' travel trailer I was getting about 8 mpg. I have a 34' one now but do not haul it. I have a piece of land by the Bay and have it all set up there. I was lucky and only paid $4000.00 for it. About 1/2 price only because this couple was getting divorced and needed it gone.

Used is definitely better for pricing, but you have to go see them in person. Pictures just don't give the full condition. Pictures don't tell you if the previous owner smoked or cleaned or left the holding tank full instead of dumping at the end of each trip. We bought ours new because we looked at some used ones. If you look at used ones, don't forget about maintenance to the wheel bearings and brakes. Important part that can ruin a trip. Oh and tire condition. Make sure EVERY switch does something. Check exterior for excessive sealant, a clue that there is or has been a leak. And most important, don't let emotion get involved.
We get some rules to follow.
That and this, these and those

I have been though two divorce so I know all about that. The firs thing I did before anything was even filed on that second one (it was a monster) was swapped the titles to my vintage mustangs to mom. If she wanted half the money I sold them cheap enough to mom, lol.

I looked at one today. Looked great in the pictures. 2006 model. I could tell at the front it had previous water damage because part of the floor was plywood and the other half was particle board. It has lots of leaks somewhere. One light socket you could see it had sparked and was out of the camper. Looking though that hole I could still see water clinging. And lots of soft spots in the floor. Just had to walk away from that, I knew the beds were removed but still thought it was worth a look at 2000, still looking on.

There is a older slide in locally for 500. If nothing else may snag that and just use the tents we have. For this year.

On what was available in my area I got one slide in today. I needs a light remodel inside today but the guy even had the screw jack handle. After talking over price. He was wanting 500 originally we found it had a small leak, but it hasn't been leaking very long and someone had busted out one of the side glass I wound up paying 300 for it.

The maker Len-Dar is out of business, they only made campers between 1984 and 1998. But looking on google didn't turn up much. Very, very few pictures. One on youtube like mine a guy is redoing. I did find one pdf.

It's not perfect, but for the price it was a great deal. Me and her are working on the floor plan now. It will hold a full size bed with room left over so it will work well. It fits into my SWB dodge PU with tail gate down just about all the way to the end of it. It didn't even really feel like it was in the back of the truck at 55 MPH, I will have to see how it does at higher speed.

I also found a older vintage slide in I can get for about 50 to 60 bucks, lots of wood needs to be replaced but I may get it for a project. They also have a vintage 1964 Shasta trailer that needs to be redone nearly completely but all the aluminum panels are there. 125 for that one. May just get it to slowly redo or just use the trailer for something else.

This is the other one I looked at. I will know tomorrow if I am getting it or not. Yes it's in a junkyard, lol. It was used as a camp at one time and when they junked the truck they just let the camper go with it.

There is a old motor home in the junk yard that has lots and lots of leaks but all the high dollar spring loaded RV style latches on the cabins are still there. I will be stripping them off tomorrow with the levels and stuff like that. It has a clam shell fiberglass luggage rack on the roof of that RV too. Four bolts and it's mine as well.

Went on a two day camping trip in tents with the kids. We left at about 10 pm when it started flooding and the tents started leaking. Looks like they need to be stretched out and resealed. They had been in storage for a while, lol. Why we decided to test run them before the 4 to 5 day trip next time I am home from work. I got them drying out in the sun now.

On the camper I got I am doing some stripping out right now, to finish up what I started before we left on our short trip. Wanting to pull the panels back to make sure nothing in there needs to be stripped out. May even get the chance to put back in some before I leave for work WED night.

Right before we left for work I got to use the slide in. It turns out it need a lot of hidden work and replaced a LOT of the frame work under the skin. Peeling back the tin and wood on the inside to get it fixed right. I worked on it for close to two weeks straight while at home starting on it around 2 to 3 and working until midnight or one. I still have a few things to do to it.

I redid all cabinet doors, resealed the roof and seams, replaced wood, new truck tiedowns, the board for controlling the ceiling vent fan was bad so I just bypassed it and it works full speed sucking out now. Complete rewire on the 12v side with led lights, usb chargers, shunt switch for when I am on 12v it will turn off the out side marker lights. The whole 110v side was redone as well. New AC unit, mini fridge, micro wave, vent fans and a new style box to plug in at camp sites (30amp) also have a adapter to where I can plug it into a standard house socket if needed (15amp). The ceiling had to be redone and several ribs in the roof were replaced with thicker wood. (split in half 2x4 it gives it a slight arch to it when you do it) I had enough tile left over to do the floor from when I did my bed room and closet. Haven't found one leak on it yet since all the repairs. I have a plastic bottom on one of the doors and need to find the right size aluminum to cut and fit into place. The out side lock was added because I don't have a key for it. It turns out these bargman locks are really expensive to fix. Hell there are some complete on ebay right now for over 300 bucks just for the same set up I have with key.

I made the rear two opening side door for tieing down the camper into storage by enclosing them in and making the door ways bigger. Takes two people to properly align it up in the pickup bed and back up but not bad at all to get it into the truck. The missing drawer hole under the sink was redone to make it wider and deeper. No need to wasting that empty space. Made the twin bed into a full bed that folds up and uses a futon mattress. I have considered making some extra storage in the front out side as well but haven't committed to it yet. It would take even more precision backing up.

Things left to do. I need to repaint some white on the bottom side, clear coat the counter top, get a one or two burner stove top, build the drawer under the microwave. The vent fan behind the microwave stopped working, need to make some wheels for the AC to slide out into place better. it slides out now when you open the old air intake for the gas powered fridge but it has to be hand pushed and the aligned before the set screw holding it into place can be put in. Also got a cabinet going in under the bed to max out storage space. All in all we like it. I should pick up the other one this time home. It will have 110v wired into it but mainly for one AC unit, fans and phones/computer charging. It will be built more like a bunk house for the kids.

Later on I hope to find a bigger cab over one with bathroom to redo for our main one on the little trips the wife and I like to take. You can't beat 22 bucks or less a night for all hookups and power. The view is usually great as well.
