belt toolbox (edc)

#1 Post by Karl Klammer »

Hi,

I'm loosely following some "Zombie Apocalypse"/"American Preppers" style forums and have adopted the idea of an EDC kit (Every Day Carry-kit).
I guess this "ready for anything(shtf)" mentality is somehow toughbook-esque and thus only semi off-topic for this forum.

Anyways, I've introduced a friend to lockpicking last fortnight and by accident solved a question, that has plagued me for years:
What is more practical than a lighter and fits into the second pocket of my leatherman premium belt holster?
The answer I discovered through many journeys through the Amazon.com jungle:
The Multipick, a small fold-up lockpicking set, consisting of 6 picks and a tension wrench.

Do you folks have something similar to an EDC?
Always looking for inspiration on small+versatile stuff to carry around with everyday...

Cheers,
Karl

My current EDC setup:
- cf19mk6 mil810 laptop + shoulderstraps
- black fjällraven trousers
- - xcover3 mil810 phone
- - lighter(s), keyring ( keys, survivor mil810 usb stick [backup] )
- - belt
- - - leatherman premium holster
- - - - leatherman wave + screwdriver bitset
- - - - led lenser flashlight
- - - - multipick (new, replaces lighter, inspired this thread)
- - - fox holster
- - - - fox mean green pepper spray
- - wallet ( *cards, comb, door-shimming card, ibuprofen )
- glasses

I have a BOB (bug out bag) but not a everyday kit. I taught myself lock picking in high school with Locks, picks and clicks / lock picking simplified and volume 1-3 of how to make your own professional lock picking tools. Have you seen the lock pick sets that fold up into a credit card.

http://www.shomer-tec.com/media/images/ccpx_med4.jpg

There are also a ton of other credit card tools out there. This one has fire starter, knife, etc. One could be made to fit inside the Toughbook PCMCIA or express card slot.

I also trying to plan out my next take down rifle and getting a custom barrel re-lined from .22 LR to .17 HM2 for the AR-7 that stays in my backpack.

I used to own that very same card picking set.
It looks great on paper, but boy does it suck in practice.
The handles are way to short, hard to grab, hard to feel.

The SOG tool looks interesting. Do you have any hands-on experience with it?

I've got a BOB too and really hope that electronics wrapped in clothes wrapped in tinfoil stand a chance against EMPs ;-)

Here is my EDC flashlight: http://flashlight.nitecore.com/product/mh20

Here are my TWO EDC knives (One in each pocket):

I've given up on sharpening my blades so having a utility knife is way more practical.... I just buy new blades!

If I have to carry my gun I carry my G27 Gen 3:

Rob are you saying my AR15 diamond back pistol with 100 round mag is not practical? LMAO. My dad has a 27 in 9mm. Both of my glocks are G2 22 models from the Detroit Police Dept with 3 15 round mags each and two 36 round mags each. Caliber is .40.

Karl, I haven't used the stubby picks personally. I have two sets in your standard lenth in a standard zip up pouch. But do know ton of tricks like making a beer/coke can into a shim pick for a combination lock.

I haven't personally used that SOG tool but I have had it on my list of stuff to get and try out.

On the EMP stuff we talked about this not that long ago on NBR. I think some toughbooks are rated as long as they aren't plugged in the wall, unless they are using a special plug in.

Found the thread.

Looks like CF-30's up are, or any other as long as it meets MIL-STD-461F. No tin foil required.

The CF19s are also EMI tested: http://www.panasonic.com/business/tough ... -certs.asp
That "interference testing" is probably fine for most real-life events, like malfunctioning transformer stations.

The tinfoil might increase the odds for some smaller HEMP/HEMV blasts.
We're all doomed if/when a telegraph-wire-melting scenario strikes - such as the super solar flares of 1859 and 2012.

Anyways, I'm trying to protect my emergency computing kit with the mentioned tinfoil hack.
(2 sunload folding cigs panels[62wp,30wp] / 2 powergorilla solar batteries / cf19mk3 / wifi-ap / sim cards)
Good to know the toughbook would stand a chance without tinfoil ;-)

Cheers.

Easter Day Carry

#7 Post by Karl Klammer »

Summer is slowly starting out over here in Munich / Europe,
which unfortunately also means that I'll have waaay less pockets to hunk around all my gear.
I've thus spent a good part of this weekend downsizing my Easter Day Carry,
to a front-pocket-sized, featherlight 625g =~ 22oz all-in ...
... plus what little bulk my cf19 will add to that :lauging:
Easter Day Carry (EDC) 201704<br />1 square is 2.5x2.5cm =~ 1 square inch

A Leatherman Juice S2 (130g) is in the mail and will replace the pictured LM Wave (240g) within a few days,
which might free up enough space to add one of those sweet MacGyver multitools.

I got my Juice S2 today and boy does it suck.
It sucks in so many creative ways on so many levels, that any attempt of describing the magnitude of its crapitude would be doomed to fail.

Oh well, at least it gave me some new appreciation for my Wave.
