Wind turbine to run ALL my servers and workstation??

#1 Post by Rob »

This... I'm working with this company to buy one of these to put on the roof of my house.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Wind-turbine-ge ... SwA4dWJlha

Here too: http://mwands.com/store/wind-turbine-pr ... nd-turbine

I'll paint it myself of course unless it's worth the $260 for hot dipped galvanized?

I know I need a pure sine wave inverter and my total continuous 24/7 load is between 800 watts and 900 watts during the day and drops to 500 watts when the monitors are off (I have 6 total LCD screens)

I'm thinking a 1000 watt inverter to start with such as this: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Power-Inverter- ... SwT6pVpxck

What else am I missing? I am working on getting a 24 hour reading on my entire set up here so that I know how many KWH's I'm using just on that. Based on my 24 hour load rating I'll base that to get the correct battery too. They also want $300 just for the roof mount which seems crazy:

http://mwands.com/store/wind-turbine-pr ... roof-mount

My electric bill is getting insane.... it was $208.97 last month at 1,596 kWh and I know that this will pay for it's self but how long will it take? I won't know til tomorrow at 2:45PM CST when my 24 hour test is done! :)

I have attached the full blown quote to this post as well :)

I've been running a 1800 Watt 24V Xantrex inverter for several years. 1000W is a little small.

My wind generator is an old Air403.24V...noisy.....barely keeps the batteries warm. A better location would help.

I have two charge controllers since I added panels. The Outback is a good one and popular here.

I didn't look at the quote yet. O.K.....looked at it.

They don't have 24V? Wire size and run mate. Copper is expensive.

I like Backwoods Solar but that's me. No toys in their catalog....just quality stuff.

I paid a little more but this is all the power I have.

In my case my power bill has been new batteries....no free lunch.....but no power bills in 10+ years. Xtra money goes into solar panels.

With the Xantrex the face plate /meter /switch comes off and can be relocated 30 feet or more away. I used direct burial phone wire to replace the ultralight control wire. Less resistance = more line length.
Fair for you/ Fair for me.
I chose to NOT be organized.

Galvanised or go home. Without that and a phosphor coating my Asko appliances would have been rusted to death in a cold humid garage!

I could do 24V Jeff. Noted on the 1000 watt. Will go higher to 1500+ (Of course 1800 watts = 15 amps so that's ideal right?)

So with that you'd need HALF the gauge since the voltage is double right? You're right, copper is VERY expensive!

Also what kind of 24V battery should I buy? What size I guess is what I'm asking? Can you just pop any old 1500 watt inverter on any old 24V battery? I find it hard to believe that a deep cycle marine battery can handle the crazy sized inverters that are out there (5K - 10K for example).... How the HELL can you draw 5,000 watts of AC power from a single deep cycle battery? You can't right?

Thanks!

You are probably going to have to use 4 6v golf cart batteries in series to get 24v and the kind of output that will last. More durable than a single 24v. Or mabey 2 8d batteries (12v)
We get some rules to follow.
That and this, these and those
.

CF-20 Mk1, CF-31 Mk5 i7, CF-31 Mk6 i7, FZ-G1 Mk2, CF-54 Mk2, CF-29 Mk5, CF-74J,
Star Labs Star Lite Mk3, Star Labs Labtop Mk3, Raspberry Pi 4b 8gb, Raspberry Pi-400, Raspberry Zero W(running piaware), Raspberry Pi 2

Pretty close if not the same.

My meter/on-off has been tweaked a bit, the face-plate is next to the toilet where I could possibly be standing sometime during the day. Not trying to be crude but it's the closest place in the house to the power/pump house.

BUT, reading aboot the wind unit...

1. Power comes out three phase AC. (NOT DC) (therefore dangerous as zark)...
2. Line loss for AC negligible....which is a good thing. Compare 10/3 w/ 0 size wire.

Picture inbound of face-plate. Typical reading for dark outside and a bunch of battery chargers running.

More later if you need it.

nice.

maybe think about powering some devices directly via 24v?
many soho routers / access points / laptops can be run on 12/24v dc, e.g. by using a 12v car adapter.

would be a waste to first convert 24v dc wind to 110/230v ac and then back to 12/24v dc again
e.g. 100w dc wind => 80w ac household=> 64w dc laptop, assuming 80% conversion efficiency

The numbers are in here:

24 hour run for everything: 15.24 kWh
* 30 days = 457 kWh

$208.97 bill = 1596 kWh
= $0.1309335/kWh
*457 kWh
= $59.84/month

$1000 setup would pay for it's self in 16.71 months....
