Fuel Economy with style

#1 Post by ADOR »

She has been wanting to get a gas economy car. Been looking, I can't see dropping a lot into a Honda, etc. So I got this.

2008 Mini Cooper Clubman

Standard model but has the stripes, moon roof, third door. It's longer than a standard mini so it has more room. I left the dealership (me and the dealership) thinking I had NO spare tire. They sell the standard mini's with out one as they have run flats on them. The clubman is suppose to have a space saver one though. Well I knew there were two lift up compartments in the back, when I got home I found yet another space under there and there was the spare, lol. Oh well, it worked to my advantage when talking price.

The automatic has the steering wheel shifters too.

Very nice. I really like the 2 tone paint. Lady in town had one like it with dark green and black trim. She just traded it in at the Mercides dealership on a new sporty rag top but they got money to blow.

Don't know how much longer that link will be good, they haven't took it down yet.

Found the original window sticker in the glove box. It was 25K new. They were asking 12k, I got it for 10k. 2k down, and traded in the wife's old 92 Nissan she has been wanting 500 for. So with all the charges I got it for 9k, 231 a month on the notes was nice. It's not the S model so insurance is sky high either.

Older thread... but I have owned two of the Mini coopers... 04 and a 07. 07 being my current vehicle. Got the Supercharged one first, and now im on my turbo S edition... Love the cars... get great gas mileage and i use it for work daily. Enjoy, and learn to work on it yourself, as they are a lot easier then you might think.... Stray away from sensors but the rest is fine. I got my latest for 8K with only 60K miles on it... paid some in cash got 5K out on a loan and will have it paid off soon... FYI even if it is the S model, at least in IL, my insurance was 4$ different from the base because its a two door hatchback and thats a "safe" car, so they dont charge me a lot for it.

I hot rod so that isn't a problem. LOL. About after a month of owning it it had a couple of minor issues. I was thinking it was the timing chain that was ticking sound but cleaning of the vanos valves solved that problem. I then did a light tune up with new plugs and found out coil on plug on #1 and 2 cylinders was a no name. I put two bosh replacements on it. It is running a lot better now. 109K on the clock now. A new vanos valve on the exhaust side as well. I had started getting P0015 code and then got a code for #2 cylinder misfiring. I think this will clear that up and I don't hear any chain clank now either. I did buy the complete upgraded timing chain with the white tentioners as well. From looking in the cam sensor holes I still have the factory red one.

I found a place on amazon that has the original bosh coil packs for 29 bucks each. I see they are 32 now.

Got the plugs from amazon too, then snagged the valve from ebay. Mainly just using the original parts numbers as search reference.

Even though the ones I took off weren't matching I ziplocked them and put them with the spare tire for just incase later on.

Well our everyday cars are my 05 dodge quad cab with Hemi, 01 suburban 5.3/auto and now this Mini so we could wait, she still drove it while we waited.

I pulled the spare out of it today to see how much air it had it it. Suppose to be 60 Psi but it had 0, the paint was still on the tread so it probaly hasn't been checked since 08. I filled it to max and going to check it here in a few days to see if it's leaking. I just got the full size rim in for a full sized spare. It will be next time in before I get a tire for it money wise. But we won't be keeping it in it all the time. Just when me and her do long trips together. Need to make/find a black cloth bag for the full size spare as well. I know there is a mod to put the spare tire under the mini, but I will have to re-read it. Suppose to be a bolt on using factory parts. If it will fit it will go full size under the car in the rear, but regular mini's don't have a spare tire well so that may interfere.

One of these days I am going to go test drive a turbo mini just to see what one will do. I have thought about a "thumper" ported head if I ever have to do any engine work on this car.
