Motion Computing Tablet PC C5

#1 Post by Shawn »

I just bought a C5.
Core 2 solo. 1.2ghz u2200. 2gb ram and 80gb HDD. complete with dock, battery, and it looks like stylus also. $113.00 free shipping. Just got a 2nd battery for $30.00 free shipping.
It's loaded with Ubuntu 12.**, complete and ready to go. I have a 1.8 zif 32gb SSD I can drop in, if I want. If it has the optional Sierra WWAN, then it will have GPS also. May put Win7 on it when it gets here. I will try Ubuntu for a while though.
I would have rather got a Panasonic H1, but these are so much more realistically priced.
Just sold my work cf51 so this is a good replacement. I really need the built in camera for work.
One bad thing is this has no ports other than dock. For $130(new) I can get an Easyconnect mini dohickey that has usb and Ethernet ports. I will wait at that price.

I haven't had time to put the one's I have together but I like the way the MC LE1600 worked. Only thing about those are the batteries don't last even when bought new. I hope the C5's batteries work better. The case does come apart easy. I have three single core units to get a hard drive for and load. I also have a dual core model with busted screen and a dual core model with good screen but dead motherboard. Just haven't had time to swap them out yet.

I looked a several fixer uppers, but by the time I bought a battery and a stylus, I would have had more in them than buying this one ready to go. I really wanted a dual core, but they cost at least 50% more.
Do you need batteries for the C5's?...I got a link for $30.00 shipped.
I like Android on my Defy phone. If everything worked, I would like to try it on this tablet. First, I will make a clone DVD of the Ubuntu setup that's on it now.

Well, I tried the mini pci express sd card thingy in the cf52 and it did not show up in bios. I installed it in the C5 and it sees the 32gb sd card with no modifications. I also took out the Intel 4965 and 1st tried a 6250 but it has bluetooth on it. I didn't want any conflicts so I put in the 5100 instead. I think I'm going to get a 5300 because the C5 already has 3 antennas. I also pulled the platter drive and put in a 32gb Sandisk SSD I picked up for $25.00. Now to clone the platter and reinstall the image.

Here's some info. The Sandisk had an unbooted cf30 mk3 win7 image on it. It booted and runs fine on the C5. Missing 2 drivers and wants a good serial. It wants to be activated in 3 days. But it runs fine.
Ya gotta love Acronis.

I have a C5v coming .....

Going to give my brother my core 2 duo unit. He's an artist and a digitizer will be great for him...
I was going to pick up a core 2 duo for him and keep mine. but I saw these and thought upgrade while I have the chance.

I got a C5v with an Intel I5 470um 133ghz.
windows 7 coa
2gb ram
64gb SSD
USB port beside power port.
3 megapixel camera.
LED illuminated lcd panel.
Gorilla glass
Intel 6200 wifi
Bridge backup battery. you can hotswap the batteries. you have like 2 minutes runtime to swap..
i just installed sketchbook pro on the one I have now. cool program. my bro will enjoy this. i had to go to sketchbook prefs and disable screen rotate. otherwise the lag is bad..

If I had feelings, they would be hurt........ Seriously though. No regrets...Considering I have $138.00 invested for the whole unit. I can't touch a CF H1 hard drive caddy for that price. These meet MIL-STD-810G and are IP54 rated.

I guess I'll have to draw a picture of a Motion tablet now........

Let me know how it runs, for that price I would snag one too. I picked up a cheap dock for the H1 incase one of these days I get one.

I just got mt C5v Friday. I am upgrading from a Core2 duo C5. The I5 1.06 520um is a worthwhile upgrade. The C5v is MUCH easier to upgrade internally. Standard sata connector. No zif connector anymore. The wifi and wwan slots are not covered by the tin heat shield anymore. They use a lot less tape on the inside. ONE wire connector to remove the rear cover, not 4 like the C5.
The 2gb unit has 1 2gb stick on the bottom side. The top slot was empty. All the C5s I have owned had both slots filled from the factory.
I had a 32gb SSD in my C5. I used a mini PCI-E to SD card in the wwan slot both units. I have a 32gb SD card that I use as a 2nd drive.
The C5v for sale on fleabay have a USB port beside the power port.
The lcd is a STD AFFS+ Gorilla Glass. AFFS+ is LED backlight.

From the Hydis web site.

HYDIS put its name on the TFT-LCD map with the creation of AFFS (Advanced Fringe Field Switching Technology)—securing the Number 1 position in the Tablet PC industry. Changing with the times and responding to the demand for even more advanced products, we have evolved AFFS to AFFS+, technology that boasts lowered power consumption, improved transmission of color and images, and impressive internal LCD panel reflection—guaranteeing perfect readability even under the brightest sunlight. AFFS+ is True Evolutionary Progress

AFFS+ is different than View Anywhere. STD is a standard display. VAD is View Anywhere display.
