I haven't done much with any of the newer ones yet. I am still on the Intel x25 series.

I'd recommend Samsung 850 EVO. Watch for lowest prices on Newegg and Amazon. Was seeing 512GB on Amazon bouncing around $165-$185 last few weeks. Got a Samsung 256GB from Newegg last January for $105 + tax.

The EVO series has a nice utility that can reserve part of the SSD for "swap space" that reduces overall wear. The 850 PRO series doesn't use that free utility, but you can get the same effect by formatting a PRO to only 90% true capacity, which lets the internal controller utilize the unformatted 10% for wear leveling.

This is a great thread. Obviously maxing out the RAM, going to a SSD, are a good place to start. Like others have said, going to a i-5 or i-7 processor is the cat's meow. You might find some middle ground upgrading from a MK1 CF-30 to a newer MK2 or MK3...or as others have said, go for a CF-31 (these have gone down in price lately. Sadlmkr, Azrial, and I have each picked one up this week for a great price)...

You may have to deal with an issue or two.

Typing now on CF-31 that PO got carried away with the blue stuff. Thread-locker.

IOW the touchpad is dis-connected and I am having a time getting to the cable. Mr. Threadlocker got a leetle bit carried away.

Never knew how handy a touchpad was until I didn't have one.

I'll crack the case in the morning. Using hot air work station at 253 degrees to melt the krap out of the way.

The price? A bargain.

Sent from 31Papa using USB mouse.

Well lets get back to on this subject some one reply at a time and go head and do a few tweaks to your current set up on the hard drive.

http://www.thewindowsclub.com/downloading-uwt2

This will be the first step in helping speed your machine up some. Once you reply to this I will put up more and more and we will baby step our way on all the tweaks I do.

This is a good simple one called the ultimate windows tweaker. It puts a lot of your hidden settings all in one place. You want to extract that program from the above download link and then right click and run as administrator. You can set the GUI settings to your liking and tweak your UI. The most important thing is under the performance tab to put the three side bars all the way to the left. Make sure you hit apply after each tab.

After that is done if you don't have Ccleaner installed already install that and we will go into that next unless you want to discuss more of what all can be done with the UWT.

UWT
Ccleaner
add/remove programs to trim fat
Turn windows features on or off (completely turn off IE, search or sidebar processes)
Turn off sounds you don't need like the sound file windows plays on start up and shut down.
kill and disable unwanted services
turn un-used stuff of in the bios (gps, fingerprint, bluetooth, etc for example)
see what process are running and what processes you want to kill/disable
if needed fully revamp the GUI and replace windows explorer.exe shell with a alternative shell

This will be in future postings if you need it.

The Mk2 1.6 GHz Dual Core2 Duo can not only run an X64 OS, it's 965 chipset will support 8GB of RAM.
