LED LCD conversion

#1 Post by Shawn »

Figure I would start my own thread..
Thanks to Ohlip and Onakriss for doing all the lectrical calculatin and posting their conversions first...

I used a 500 nit panel and added 2 strips to it..There is less room than a 1000 nit screen.
I can see some hotspots from the LED's on the taskbar. It is noticeable with a light colored taskbar.
Not as much with a darker screen.

I tested this running a Windows 7 LiveCD. It did not have any brightness adjustment, so until I install the lid on a unit with a full install, what you see is what I get...

First time I ignored Teo's instructions and installed the LED's in the metal that the CCFL was in. That was a bad choice. The CCFL holder is very shiny and the reflections cause problems. Maybe I will paint the metal LED strip holder black next time. I will be converting a 1000 nit panel next.

I have not figured how to completely eliminate the hotspots. I think most of my problem is that the 500 nit screen is thinner and the LED's are closer to the glass of the LCD panel.
It's very acceptable for a first attempt.
Here are some photo's

I have a CF-52 with shadows in the task bar area. I widened the task-bar and it looks like it belongs there. Nice work.

I did tear it apart and try again today...
I got some anti reflection black paint for the plastic strip behind the LED strips, and added a diffuser. I shaped a diffuser from an old LCD into an L and placed between the LED's and the glass panel. Neither of these seemed to have much of an effect..

It is what it is...

My conclusion is that the LED's are a bit too close to the glass on the narrower 500 nit panel..There is nothing I can do about that...I will look for a stronger diffuser, but being that close, I don't think it will matter..I can't go too white on the diffuser or I will lose brightness..

If I choose a darker taskbar, the hotspots will almost vanish....

From what Ohlip said, the LED strips will increase battery life by 15 to 20%...That's a fair trade for some minor hotspots on the taskbar..
