CF-72 cpu upgrade

So the Pentium 4 CPU is removable in a CF-72......who knew. :D

So my question is how far can I go,the list shows up to 2.6 in the 400 FSB but the multipliers are different, now I did this on a CF-51 1.7 Pentium M where I put a 2.13 Pentium M in it but it showed CPU speed as 1.6. I was told that was due to the different multiplier and never found out how fast it was really going.

Mind you this was 2 years ago. As I have several CF-72's and too much time on my hands,I want to kick it up to 2.6. Now you guys need to tell me why I can't if I can't,never too old to learn. :P

Back then the 72's and 48's had a removable CPU. I had two Mk1 or Mk3 72's and got rid of them a few years back. I never really got deep into them. What's the full model number so we can figure out the full specs.

Is the heat sink solid copper like on the 51?

I have a lot of the older gaming laptops I collect and when I can find the older CPU's cheap I upgrade. I think the best one is the Voodoo with P4 3.8 extreme, 7800 GTX and dual harddrives in RAID.

I think those units also have ATI graphics so that will help in the power department as well.

Let the research begin. (GIVE ME FUEL, GIVE ME FIRE, GIVE ME THAT WHICH I DESIRE)

Quotes below

The CF-72s can be upgraded, but only in the same family, I.E. the 1.6Ghz P4m model will accept up to a 2.5Ghz p4m processor as long as it is a 478 pin .13micron 400mhz front side bus. The Pentium 3m models will take up to around a 1.2Ghz p3m.
So it depends on which processor the CF-48 is actually using and whether they are soldered in.

( I think before that is where you messed up on your speed on your previous swap. If you dropped a 533 MHZ CPU into a motherboard that only supported 400 MHZ speed it will work but will be underclocked)(this can help some on heat running underclocked, but unless your cooling is messed up the Pentium M series runs very cool to begin with and shouldn't really need it)

CF-72VCJUZQM is the one I am putting together from a couple of units,it's interesting in that you split the case and the heatsink and fan are on one half and the motherboard on the other.BRB as I take some photos. These are from the 72X donor with a shorted mobo.

Just picked up a Pentium 4 2.5ghz SL6WY for it,the 2.6 was really expensive for me to just fool around with and I got this one from a buyer I deal with. Should be interesting with over a GB of ram in it and a 7200rpm drive.

That is the reason on the Pentium M's I stick with the 2.0 and some times the 2.1. I can get those for around 20 bucks, it jumps to 80 plus for the 2.2.

I don't have anything right now that needs it, but thanks anyway. ( I am on some desktop projects right now)
