Globalsat BU-353

#1 Post by toughasnails »

Is the Globalsat BU-353 any good . I got a cheap -o one at the moment , CoPilot Navigator 9 which works ok but the software that came with it sucks and the gps will not work with ms streets or another one I tried. As much as I use GPS I really don't want to spend the $$$$. This one seems to be a fair price $35.00 on ebay or is their another one I should look at.I will be using it with my CF-18 MK1.

Blair, The BU-353 is an outstanding piece of equipment! I probably own a dozen or so, I have sold at least 50 and have nothing but good things to say about them. I just sold a CF-28 to my new tugboat captain to use delivering yachts. He has a lot of experience with GPS, and could not believe the cold start acquisition time the first time we fired up his new toy. I've never had one fail and I've been using them for 4 or 5 years now.

The CoPilot does not even have any specs listed, so I don't know if it even has a good chipset!
And it sounds like it does not have a standard nema output, Garmin did that as well on some of their units and thats not nice that you are limited on the software you can use

I use this unit, its smaller and sealed better than the BU-353
Sold about 30 of them ,and no failures
About $20 more, and it uses the same chipset so perfomance would be equal to the BU-353

The software that came with it is crap and it will not work with any software on the market. It's not NMEA compliant so your stuck with the software it came with. I will take a look at the Holux

For some reason in Canada the Holux is more popular
The performace is the same, but it might be more water resistant as I see the term waterproof in the sellers discription
The computer store that I buy hardware from in Vancouver even sells it
Here is a link to the Alberta online store that I buy Gps products from
They have the best price in Canada on this model
http://www.gpscity.ca/holux-gr-213-gps.html
btw they sell the bu-353 as well for $6 less than the holux

Thanks Alex , I think I will pick up a holux 213. The reviews I read were good so I think I will email them and see how much they charge for shipping.
