More adapter testing

#1 Post by ADOR »

The adapter came in while I was gone and my 1.8" sata 64 gb ssd is in. Who wants to see some test on what units?

That is the kind of adapter I got.

I know I will be throwing that into a Mk7 M34 but I am willing to try it out in a CF-28 and some others first if you are wanting to see the results.

I would assume that your reasoning for using this would be a space saving reason? why 1.8" instead of 2.5"... I must have missed your conversation somewhere.

Or are we just dicking around for fun. I'd wonder about W7 on your CF-M34... After tweaked on an SSD... I'd bet that would be a snappy little machine!
Rugged Toughbooks of all types... CF-31s, CF-30s, CF-29s, CF-19s, CF-52s, CF-53s, CF-74s, CF-H2... Hmmm... What else can I buy, build or modify?

1.8 drive with the adapter will fit in the caddy better.
Life will beat you into submission.

Shawn nailed it. If you seen my post awhile back trying the IDE to SD card adapter for a hard drive this is just some stuff I am trying out to see how it works. Or for fun. My everyday machines are a CF-30 Mk2, CF-19 Mk3(easy life traveling with me to work) and CF-19 Mk2 with gps(Hard life out in the woods and clocking speeds on my ATV/ATC 's) so I don't really need to upgrade these older machines, just playing around.

Just wanted to give someone who wanted to see if they wanted to upgrade one of their older machines a chance to see if it would work for what they want. A lot of our overseas friends are stuck with the older machines because of price. Even their ebay prices are way over inflated compared to ours.

In my search for more adapters to test I found compact flash to SD card adapter. Anybody used one yet? I couldn't find the quad card holder but I am still looking for one, but ebay has some duals. Going to test this with my compact flash to ide adapters.

always wanted to do a ssd in a CF-51,I upgrade the cpu to a T7200 and thought that would be a great unit.

I never really got that deep into the CF-51's I had. All of them were Mk3's with ATI. I had one of both version one with 128MB and 256MB version. Good machines, If it would of been SATA I think I may of kept one. The last one is sitting on the shelf in my sons room going to a friend of his to replace his P3 laptop.

On the SSD I have a sata 2.5" adapter that came with it and really need to pull the SSD and speed test it straight to a SATA port on one of my desktops as I think it's the adapter locking it to 30mb speed cap, also got another adapter ide to sata to test out. It's the one they used to use in converting CF-29/18 units. Just doesn't have the "twist" that the ones that tufftech does. Got to find some more benchmarking programs to run too to test the speed out more also.

I have one left that runs,it has the high resolution screen and a really crappy paint job, then last night we found a mk3 in a drawer....wtf? So I guess I have 2 now although the one I found is in pieces.

I looked at different ways to do a ssd,I could never get an ide ssd that would work and it costs too much to do the adapter thing.

I got some more adapter combos I plan on testing and will be posting the results when I do. One I really like is the full sized SD card to IDE adapter. Windows won't load at all because it can't see the SD card but Linux loads and runs great off of it. I plan on more hacking on it later to force install Windows, just haven't researched all of it yet.

Planning out my adapter mods and ordered three different CF to SD card adapters. Dual micro SD, full size sd, and type 2 adapter. I see the sizes and speed of compact flashes have really went up too. If the speed though the adapter is good these one day would be a good option for a older toughbook, if the prices on them come down that is. I got a week left at work so I need to get them ordered so they will be there when I get home.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/SanDisk-16GB-Ex ... 27e3a6b30d
Thinking of ordering this one for testing 120 mb transfer speed

http://www.ebay.com/itm/SanDisk-256GB-E ... 3ce11d2b7a

I see they are up to 256mb size and 160mb speed.

I will have to speed test the original SSD in the M34 to see what it's max is. If the adapter is holding it back I will have to see if I can find a different adapter that isn't a 30 mb bottleneck. Not sure what the IDE to CF adapters I have are limited too also.
