I have a SD to mini pcie adapter in my Motion C5. 32gb. It's a single sd card version. Works GREAT..No issues. Doubt that any Toughbook bios would recognize it though.

Ok, I am back at work for another 28 days. I brought some of my new toys with me.

One is the usb to m-pci-e card. I have a HP gobi 2000 card, some ramdom dell wwan card, hp 5100 intel, hp 5300 intel and a couple of other cards. This is to test to see how well they work with this adapter. It should have no white list against it. If this works it would make for a very easy internal usb hack.

Number two is the IDE to SD card adapter. The test subject will be a CF-T5 with a core solo 1.2, 512mb of ram (brought a 512 stick with me but it wouldn't work, slow boot, wouldn't boot) The adapter had one pin clipped from the factory and would only show the card in the bios in one direction.

Quick boot to bios it shows up the SD card. First was a PNY class 4, 8gb card. Second a Gskill micro sdhc 32 gb card in adapter. Third and what's in the machine right now is a Samsung sdhc class 10 card. All cards show fine in bios but I have only tried to load windows 7 so far on it and it won't see the samsung card. I left it at it's fat32 format, then pulled it and reformated to ntfs and got the same thing.

Now for more testing with different OS's and the other cards.

The card I am trying to use, I had got it for this reason. Speed and tough.

Tried DSL linux last night, it reconize the touchpad for some reason on that unit. I then tried my usb stick with pendrivelinux (mandriva 2007.1) everything worked, even had wireless working. Went to install it and it started but stopped and never gave a notice it stopped during the install. Still on the Samsung SD card. Will try more tomorrow when I get off work.

Swapped to the 32 GB card last night, still can't get it to work correctly so far. If you go to the boot options screens in bios the name of the hard drive is "SD card adapter".

Finally got back on this tonight. Success, everything works in Linux Mint 15. I used 32 bit MATE or Xfce version. Can't remember the one I used. Got some more tests I am going to try on it.

I will be swapping SD cards and loading Puppy Linux Retro 5.7 on it, Then I will be going back to see if I can get windows 7 to load on it. I know it will take it and work I dropped a 40 GB hard drive into it and it loaded up fine with 7.

Never could get the mouse pad to work yet in DSL, may try it again if I can get the other OS's working.

Puppy loaded up and worked. If you don't have a SD card in the adapter the install disk will hang on a boot screen. Then you can plug the card in and it will take off, lol. I think I damaged the MINT install, going to have to redo it.

Enjoying this topic. I've tried this on another computer, but never had much success. Will be interesting to see how you fare.

I know that Windows normally prevents full installation on what it considers removable media such as a USB stick or an SD in a slot in a computer. I don't know how it sees an SD card in an IDE adapter.

Keep up the good work.

I have been doing more question and Linux works with out problems on different cards. Windows 7 still doesn't want to load. I tried several different formats and it still doesn't "see" the card. I will try a XP disk on it when I get home.

I know Microsoft use to block usb boot in XP. It would allow the install but windows is programed to cut the usb ports off, then back on during booting. That is whats prevents XP from booting from a USB stick or external hard drive. There is a hack you can do to work around that. You install XP as normal and just edit some files. Don't update and it will stay that way.
