Re: Linux's worst enemy

From a user perspective, probably not much. The command options are a bit different, due to the different lineages of BSD and GNU/Linux. Linux supports more hardware (with a few exceptions). Underneath, Linux is generally quicker to try new things and new approaches. The BSDs take more time to incor...

Re: FZ-A1 update ???

Yes, perhaps, though I can't believe there is so much difference in the hardware versions that it's not possible to support them all. As for getting Windows 10 in the first place, I had almost blown it off since it never popped up to auto-install, but it finally did, so I let it go to see if the tab...

Re: FZ-A1 update ???

The lack of support is not surprising, and definitely disappointing given what these things cost. I updated my FZ-G1 to Windows 10 recently, and when I went to Panny's website to see if they had updated any of their utilities for it, it said that Windows 10 is not supported on Mk 1 FZ-G1s**. It's a ...

Re: USB Killer 2.0 - 220V

USB, unlike Firewire and Thunderbolt, doesn't do DMA (though that may have changed with version 3.1, I haven't checked). However, BadUSB was insidious nonetheless because it involved subverting the firmware in the microcontroller on the stick, making it unremovable and undetectable by the user. Sinc...

Re: OS X

Cool...a Toughbook hackintosh :) Mac reference: I presume since OSX is what comes on Macs, and Apple hardware can sometimes be a little "unusual" (i.e., customized by the OEMs for Apple), that the odd touchpad behavior (with OSX on a Toughpad and Mint on a MB Pro) is not unexpected, and pe...

Re: What do you guys use your Toughbooks for?

My Toughpad FZ-G1 for just about anything -- email, web, programming industrial automation devices, running the occasional VM. As a tablet I generally like it better than Android for more involved web surfing as Windows browsers are just better than those on Android right now. My CF-30 Mk1 isn't bei...

Re: Android tablet battery recharge

The problem I think you'll have with removing the battery completely is that the charging port may not be able to power the device by itself. My tablets and phones all use micro USB charging, but none of them will work without the battery installed. Granted, that's 5V USB, with all its limitations, ...

Re: 20" 4k Toughpad review?

Holy crap....that was a steal I don't know, I wish it was I just bought a second one for $2600 but it was an early production model with 4GB ram and 128GB hd and 600 hours on it. They are worth $2500 in my book but $5-6k is to much but I haven't seen a better screen on any other device. The images ...

Re: Robs almighty Toughpad G1 review + simple Toughbook stor

Rob, nice writeup. I agree with everything you said. The screen on this alone is so much better than my CF-30 I wouldn't go back for primary use. I only have a few complaints: 1. Obnoxious cooling fan. There's a little yellowjacket trapped inside the G1 that gets angry every once in awhile when I (o...
