Yeah, I finally figured that out last night Reinstalled using 32 bit and everything was much smoother. Probably should have thought of that earlier.

Are folks running 32 or 64 bit? I've been trying 64 - think this might be the root of my problems.

The OS version errors were mostly in the middle of an install process - no files to extract, really. Turning on Vista compatibility mode helped in some cases, and not in others.
